Hi there,
I am looking for a bit of advice around lubricating the RA and Dec worm gears on a 12 inch 1970's AE (Astronomical Equipment of Luton) Cassegrain/Newtonian. Both gears on the fork ount are exposed so I thought that using a standard type grease would not be such a good idea as it would trap any dust, dirt etc and hasten wear. Would one of those spray on scilicon type sprays be better or maybe CRC556 or similar?
Any advice appreciated.
Andrew

Can't help ya' there Andrew because my large worm is cut from nylon! Needs no lubrication. Sorry. My brass spur gear and steel worm also on that drive I just use plain old gun oil. Works fine never made a big deal to me. Mike

Here's an old thread on recommended lubricants for mounts. You might find something contained in it that you'll find useful. Good luck!
