Has anybody tried the new Skywatcher AZ 4 or Stellarvue M1 alt/az mounts. I have seen a couple of reports on the M1 head, it seems high quality and I have a suitable tripod but £160 is a fair amount of cash for a tripod head, is it worth it? The scope would be a 80mm refractor and PST (bracket reqd) and its for grab and go. Is it easy to use heads without a slow motion control? I cannot afford the like of the WO Easytouch or SkyTee etc. Thanks for any advice. Martin

I've seen and played with the AZ4 at two local Skywatcher dealers. Nice mount. Very stable and it can be locked down so when a heavy eyepiece is changed out, the scope won't suddenly pitch forward. And here in the US at $250, it's a good deal. Don't know what it runs in the UK. The tripod has tubular steel legs which makes for great stability. And I like the panning handle.
I cannot comment on the SV M1 since I've never seen or operated one.

I used the M1 with a 80mm f/6 scope I owned. The mount was very smooth in operation. I was able to track Mars at around 150X with no problem. I did have the handle though which does cost extra. I don't own any big and heavy eyepieces. So I don't know how the mount would handle changing out big and heavy eyepieces. Hope this helps.

Some thoughts on the M1 with an 80mm scope.

I have no experience with the AZ4, but can tell you from experience with the M1 that its ability to track was somewhat disappointing for me: push to an object, let go and the mount settles to somewhere between where you were and where you want to be, kind of a stick and grab situation.
