One Little Black Dot

On April 13, 2009, on and off between 01:30 and 01:50 PDT there were enough cracks in the clouds and thankfully no rain in between, to allow some views of the shadow transit of Titan on Saturn. At 01:50 PDT (UT 08:50) I was granted a long enough clear spell to do this sketch. It's a newtonian view so south is up. This was seen using an f/8 6 inch dobsonian at 240X magnification. The seeing was mediocre.

All dots in the sketch are satellites of Saturn. From left to right they are Dione, Titan, Tethys, Enceladus and Rhea.

It's pencil on white paper but I inverted the background after I scanned it. I haven’t done much planetary sketching in awhile, so my lassoing skills are rusty. Pleased enough with it though as is.

Bill,

A wonderful sketch! I actually like how your rings capture the view for me right now. What an incredible capture of the transit of Titan on Saturn. Your capture of shadow with a lessening of it to the south is realistic to me. I enjoyed viewing your sketch. Thanks!

Nice sketch Bill! I really like the way Titan seems to float above the plane of the page, it gives it a three dimensional feel. I'm looking forward to seeing more soon.

Bill,

That is a fine capture of an event that is not commonly visible. Well done.

Bill,

An excellent observation of a transit of Titan across the globe of Saturn. You are fortunate in viewing this as many observers have never witnessed this relatively rare (every 14-15 years) event. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Nice sketch, Bill!

There's a Rhea transit coming up early next week for those of us in Europe that I'm hoping to catch. Weather's pretty iffy this time of year, though.

Bill

Nice impression sketch! I envy you, as I have yet to see a Titan transit on Saturn. I noticed that you recodred many subtel details like the planets shadow at the right on the back side to the rings. Your intuitive obseving skills are sharp.

I look forward to seeing your future sketches,

Mark

Bill, what a wonderful capture of SN2099dd! I read about that today from a link in a local forum and look forward to tracking it down tomorrow night when the skies clear. Have you considered several sketches over time to compare its magnitude?
