I was able to see and sketch the large prom on the NE limb--it had a faint extension that I estimated was 4 or 5 Earth diameters out into space--very impressive. The prom changed rapidly. I put the seeing at 3.0 on the Wilson Scale. There were also 2 other large proms at about position angle 120° and 2 small surge type proms at ~PA 55°. Hope you can get out and see the Sun today. I too have been lax lately, some of it do to the wind we've having. Did get a chance today to view, the edge of the Sun looked like it was swimming. Jim, glad you got to see that prom, too. I was fortunate to be able to sketch--I had to contend with a breeze that kept blowing cumulus clouds across the Sun and also affected the seeing--I got a late start and that also affects seeing conditions. I took another look at 1800 UT and the seeing was much worse--maybe 1.5 Wilson--sort of what Tom and Beth describe. The bright scimitar shaped part of the prom had faded and the whole prom was fainter. Unfortunately my understaning is that the weather we have here is what's heading your way in the next two or three days. I agree that clouds definitely interfere with visual observations--even a light cloud cover can have an impact. The seeing is also a major limiting factor--it's probably best to try and look early in the morning, even if the Sun hasn't gained very much altitude. Post Extras:       Pages: 1
