Although it is nearly 2 days before the Mid-South Star Gaze officially begins, a number of folks had already arrived at French Camp, Mississippi. A front had just cleared so there have been two clear nights to observe. Jack Huerkamp, who uses a MallinCAM Hyper Color video astro camera on his 17.5 inch Dobsonian, left his scope and camera trained on NGC 4088 for about 40 minutes so I could sketch the object. It is unusual in shape and color but also hosts a supernova, whose brightness coincides with what I would see as the nucleus of the galaxy. The camera oversaturates its brightness a bit so it is sketched brighter than its true appearance. Nevertheless, it is very beautiful.

The link takes you to the rolandlinda3 gallery that has the sketch.

As so eloquently stated in Psalm 102:25b, the heavens are declared as "the work of your hands". What follows in 26 is more thought provoking: "They will perish, but you will remain." Witnessing star death in a galaxy is a reminder of the temporary nature of the heavens. While beautiful, their place is among created things, which is lower than the place of the creator.

Roland,

Great colorful sketch especially of NGC 4088. The camera/ 17.5 inch combo make for great sketching equipment. Excellent post.

Roland,

An excellent observation of a very interesting galaxy in Ursa Major. A supernova was recently discovered in NGC 4088. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Thank you Carlos and Frank. It has been a great time here...and unusual since we have had 4 nights of successful observing in a row!! Sketched last night with another younger sketcher (I think we are the only ones) but maybe we will get a few more started after a presentation today.

Roland
