Converting my EQ newt to a dob new
      #305532 - 01/09/05 08:19 PM

I've got a Celestron 10 newt and it's just too big for the mount.
I'm thinking it would be best suited to a dobsonian mount, but I love the tracking feature (don't care about a GoTo feature but I do like not having to constantly keep what I'm observing centered in the EP.
I decided to build a mount tonight and am searching the web for plans and examples but I thought I would pick ya'll's brains for ideas as well.
I think the only bell or whistle I want to add is tracking. I'm hoping I may get some pointers and ideas from ya'll before I start to cut wood.
Thanks,

Allen, there is the Johnsonian base and the Poncet base that you can build...there are other designs as well...good luck.

Thanks Tom,
I've just started research on it today.

Here is the first link I ever found about equatorial platforms. The Poncet table...

It has evolved since then...

Allen, what about mounting it with rotating rings? Why is it too big for the mount? Just picking your brain.

Thanks again Tom, the link is coming in handy.
Mark, it's the 10 inch mirror and it's too shaky to use for imaging, I always end up pushing it around with the clutches unlocked until I find something I want to look at.
My thinking is the mount will be better served with a smaller scope (I'm saving up for a solar scope)
My father also hates the eq mount, and I'm looking for a project to do with him.

Allen, somewhere in this forum was a "clam shell" that a guy built for his newt. This device allowed him to use the scope as a Dob (with the clam shell on), or as an EQ newt.
