Ah Lake Berryessa. I use to fish there when I was a kid. I was raised in Vallejo. Mike Traub

Thanks guys! It should be great. Berryessa is beautiful, and the kids will be able to canoe and swim all day and I can observe all night.

I used to live in Fairfield and then the Green Valley highlands. Too bad the area is becoming so built up. The light pollution is pretty bad now. How is it out there at Lake Berryessa?

Actually still pretty dark. On moonless nights it's around magnitude 6.4 or so--solidly in the Bortle green zone. That's about as dark as anywhere within two and a half hours of my house in Oakland. There are no power lines within 1.5 miles, so no neighbors with street lights. There is a bit of sky glow towards Napa and Fairfield, but it doesn't get more than 15 degrees or so above the horizon. It's far enough inland not to have a marine layer during the summer. Basically, it's as good a spot as you are going to find without going into the Sierra foothills, and that was just too long a drive. I wanted to keep it within two hours of home or I'd never be able to convince he family to go out with me for the weekends. Compared to the magnitude 2.9 skies of my backyard it's absolute nirvana. I calculated the other day that a 10 minute exposure from the new observing site would be the same as roughly an hour of integration time from home. Some luminance frames of M51 confirmed it.

Thanks Mike Glad to finally have things set up out there (or at least mostly set up). Now of only the clouds would clear up....
Of course now I need to make/have made a Losmandy/CI-700 type to CG-5 type adaptor so I can pop my CG5 up on there!

I've just upgraded my Dec axis from a 1" shaft to a 3" shaft and went from a 3" gear to a 6" gear. Now we play with the big boys!

How do you guys keep you're couterweight shafts so shiny and scratch free?! Mine is so scuffed up and scratched up. My counterweights have rust spots and paint chips...my tripod legs...oh god, don't get me started.

Easy - I stand back when you take a picture so you can not see the scratches.

I use M1 lubricant which is a rust inhibitor. Once every few months seems to do the trick.

Fresh out of the box. They always seem bigger in person than a picture. Weird.

Yes you have that right, I almost fell over when I seen the tripod box. You'll need a ladder with that style tube on the DX.
