Some new ASCOM information to augment Uncle Rod's first post. You may still be able to find the platform 4.1 download, but the website now prominently displays 5.0 and I wanted to try some of the newer features.
So for me, step 2 looked like:
2. Now, you'll need to get the ASCOM program. Go to:
http://ascom-standards.org/
The latest platform is version 5.0 which has been used with success. On the main page you will see two prominent icons on the right hand side. You will need to use each one of them: 1. First, download (from the main page) and install the ascom platform 5.0 which is required for all scopes 2. Next, navigate to the Telescope/Mount Drivers page and download/install the Celestron drivers a. Direct link http://ascom-standards.org/Downloads/ScopeDrivers.htm b. Click on Celestron Unified which is currently 5.0.10
The overall process worked like a champ for me and I was able to control my scope in CdC as well as DSLRFocus without any issues.

Hard to get lots of things to run in Vista.
Try running as "administrator" and/or in "compatibility mode"...

I've done that. I went into the CdC properties and set it to run as administrator. I think I also set it up for compatibility mode at the same time, but will have to check that tonight.
It seems to be more of a driver issue as the program doesn't seem to see the ASCOM driver. Am working with Chris R on that, but thought maybe there might be something obvious another Vista user might point out.
Thanks, Steve

All I'm trying to do is to get ASCOM drivers to work in CdC on my Vista machine. I've now have an XP machine (desktop) that I'll keep in the observatory so am trying to get that to communicate with my scope through CdC.
I'm now going to try uninstalling all the ASCOM drivers/software (but not CdC) and then reinstall it all to see if that at least gets my XP machine to communicate.

Nexremote would allow you to run the scope without a HC connected. The scope needs either the real HC or an emulated one (NexRemote) to perform the intial setup and alignment. Connect NexRemote via the "programming" cable (PC port attachment) and you can eliminate the real HC and a couple of connections.
In addition NexRemote includes a virtual port mapping capability allowing CdC to use a specific serial port that Nexremote would map to another physical serial/USB port. This can sometimes be useful on PCs with limited serial and USB ports and where the PC software is holding onto a specific serial port.
NexRemote also allows you to try out different firmware versions before committing to actually changing the firmware in the HC and MCs. This can be useful when testing compatibility with PC software like CdC.

All applications must be used with either the real or virtual hand controller (HC). I use an application called NexHub (sound familiar?) connected to the virtual port on NexRemote so I can run Astroplanner 2.0, CDC 3.0, C2A, and Nexstar Observers List all at the same time. Yea, using CDC and C2A at the same time is redundant but I am testing C2A to do a users review of the application. Hope to post the review here on CNR this spring.

Hi There is a patch for Vista users on the web sitehttp://www.stargazing.net/astropc/ I don't know if it will cure the problems you are having but might be worth a look. Regards Peter.

Peter, If you mean the 2.76c version of CdC, I am already running that. However, as I mentioned, I've given up on using my Vista laptop as I have an old XP machine I can leave in my observatory. The only problem remaining for me in XP is getting the ASCOM drivers to recognize my BT serial connection. All other Astro programs (non-ASCOM) can connect using it, but not ASCOM. Steve

Steve: Are you using the 4.1 or 5.0 version of ASCOM on that XP machine?

Maybe that's the problem. I use 4.1. Since it works (and I'm not driving any other accessories or cameras) I'm hesitant to upgrade and take a chance of it not working with the bluetooth. One other possibility is your BT dongle...some of them are apparently not successful in connecting to the Starry Night receiver. The DLink DBT-120 is the one I have.

The BT device may be the issue. Hadn't thought of that as every other program that doesn't use ASCOM works with it. I might also play around with moving back to v 4.1 to see if that 'sees' the BT device. However, don't think I'll spend money for a new BT dongle when only CdC is the only program that won't work via BT connection and I can't be sure it is a BT issue. Steve

1. Download and install Cartes du Ciel from [url=http://www.stargazing.net/astropc/]
Is there another download site for this software. I wanted to build another laptop with it, and I didn't keep the original installation executables. This site seems dead after an apparent hacker defaced the site. Mostly I am looking for the 1.2 plugin.

Will get you v3.0. This is the final beta, I believe, and works really, really well.

I just downloaded the latest version of Ciel and the ASCOM Celestron Telescope Driver Setup.
I see that I already have Ascom.tid under the plugins folder.
Do I still need to get version 1.2 plug in or is this covered?
Sean
