I recently purchases a Celestron C8-N OTA and needed a mount. I looked at a lot of ideas for buildiing one so that I could start using the scope ASAP. I didn't have enough hobby budget left for the mount. I decided to build a "pipe mount" because it looked fast and I could decide on a permanent arrangement later. Well I assembled a base out of 3/4" plywood with 30" legs arranged in a triangle shape and used a floor flange to mount the pipe to the base and to the dovetail bar. I used 1 1/2 pipe. I took it out and tried it and I couldn't believe it. THis mount is awesome. The motion is smooth and it stays where you put it. After lugging it in and out of my garage for a week I decided it needed wheels. I put the them on and now it is even better. I was wooried that there would not be enough stability but there is. It is pretty massive. I can tap the tube and the vibration is gone within 2 seconds. It doesnt look fancy but it sure works good. The scope is OK to!

Thanks Chris. What is below the scope? I see a piece of wood with a screw or two.

Wow! I can't believe all that only cost $35.00. Great job! I would slap some paint on the pipe, but that's just my opinion.

It started out to be a quick way to use the scope but turned out to be very steady. I'm going to do some filling and sanding on the plywood and then paint it.
I spent $9 Wheels with brakes, $8 Plywood, $8 1.5"X32" Pipe, $9 (2) Floor Flanges, and $2 Nipple.
I had the bolts and screws already.

Good job! I like it. 2 second dampening time is pretty good.

Nice work. Do the pipe threads by themselves hold the scope in altitude position, or did you need some kind of teflon tape to provide the right balance for holding the scope in position and smooth tracking?

The pipe threads do the job. I think thatthe pipe's diameter must be just right. It moves smoothly and stays where I put it.

Very nice, but I would take the price tag off.
