Tonight I must have edited and reduce a dozen images. Some of you are new, some have forgotten and some don't seem to care. The rules for posting images are 60k or less and CN has made a new rule for less than 800x600 in the forums. Gallaries do not apply, but if you force your website to load a image it does count.
Some come on everyone it takes a lot of my personal time to edit these images. Images I edited tonight ran from 79k to 143k. I will start deleting images from people who do not pay attention.
The only reason for these rules is modem users, so please be considerate of others.
Thank You Charles

Just a thought: When trying to upload an image it reads: "You may attach a file if you like (no bigger than 200000 bytes please)." Why not change this to 60000 (or 60 x 1024??). HTML allows you to define that limit. Why make it hard for yourself (and confusing for others) when there is a simple sollution??

That's actually a good point. You could add extra checks upon upload to prevent files larger than 60K. That could save you same hassle. The downside is if someone was uploading something that wasn't an image (ie: spreadsheets, documents, etc...) Of course, it's not too difficult to add those extra checks.

Different forums have different rules. It is a mess, but it is the best we have to go on. This forum and the CCD forum were the first two I believe that imposed file sizes, because the modem people were complaining. There is talk among the Kings about increasing the size to 100k, but I have not heard whether it is a final decision, or again, just guidelines.
It doesn't take much effort to bring a file down to under 60k. I do it all the time with files as big as 20+ megs.
Go download IrfanView. It makes resizing easy as pie. That is what I use to bring down your files to under 60k. If you turn off all the attributes that are save with a jpeg it will cut the size by almost half again. You have that option with this program. BTW IrfanView is free.

Nevertheless, whenever you find yourself in a situation where you are doing a mindless, repetitive task on a computer, you should ask yourself how you can let the computer do this work for you. That's why they are built for! Anyway you must admit that the 200000 bytes upload limit is confusing, especially when you're new! That's the real problem, unless you assume we're all pure evil . If it's too difficult to adjust the file size limit per forum, then maybe there is a way to resize it automatically after upload?
Edit: Hint: Imagemagick

Charles: An automated system would be preferable, but I try to remember that I am basically a guest here. To be sure I am not running over limits, I usually right click to check image file size under "properties". Is this a reliable way to prevent oversize files?
Thanks,
Jim

Sorry Charles,
Am sure we all appreciate the effort/time/frustration it encompasses.

The file size in properties is most definitely correct, but when resizing an image, should I aim at 60000 bytes or 61440 (= 60 x 1024 bytes = 60 x 1kb). Or am I getting too pedantic?

A thankless job for sure, Charles.
Keep up the good work.
I sometimes forget the size limit myself (and have been spanked by other moderators when I was still new here).

There are a few avatars that exceed the picture limit...or do they count?

If the avatars don't load in the "change my profile" page there is a problem. If they load, no problem. I've seen people with movies in their avatars

Charles, just post a thread line title above that reads:
Keep all images to 60k or less and 800x600!!!
kind of what Suk does in the other imaging forum.

Hi Charles,
Sorry about that, i always thought the limit was 200000K as shown on the "Attach a File" option. I didn't realise it was 60K.
I will keep images under 60K.

I know I try to remind folks as I see images posted that are greater than 60k. I think we can all help Charles out by posting peer reminders. Keep up the good work Charles!
