At what height does a base (8” reflector) become too….top heavy?
The base I built for my scope is fine but I built it in a rush and didn’t take height into much consideration and now I find it to be just a little too short. Ideally I would like to raise it up 15 more inches to make the total height ~31”. However, this is a meade scope so they don’t use the conventional mirror cell like everyone else does and I am planning on replacing is with a real mirror cell to lighten up the scope a bit and make replacing the mirror easer in the future. By doing so it will shift the center of gravity up the ota and thus increasing the height of the base if I want to keep the eyepiece at eyelevel.

Kevin, can you increase the size of the ground board? That would help if it's possible.

Increasing the size of the ground board would mean increasing the size of the rocker box if you want to properly transfer the weight to the ground. As the feet of ground board moves outwards from the center, so must the contact points between the ground board and rocker box.
As long as the OTA is balanced on the rocker box, you shouldn't have any issues. Make sure though that the movements are smooth and relatively friction-free. If not, moving the OTA could tip the scope.

Jim,
I'm surprised you didn't mention the nice pedestal you built for your Dob. The nice thing about the pedestal is that you can build a nice one like Jim's, or a crude one like mine and it is a detachable fixture that makes the scope more compact when you want to transport it.

I thought about a stand like that but decided that I would just prefer to keep things to a minimum, even if it attached to the bottom. Also, I would have to rebuild my base anyway if I replace the current mirror cell with a real mirror cell.
This is what I had in mind for my new base, only my OTA will likely remain white and the wood will be homemade from a fallen tree from my yard cut with my dads sawmill.

"Oh my gosh!"
These words involuntarily just spilled out from my mouth when that image opened. Where did you find it?
That's a beautiful telescope.

Wow, that's one of the most beautiful scopes I've ever seen (perhaps the most beautiful)!!!

Or, as Tim suggests, you could build a mount:

Could you post some more views of you observing chair. I'm old fat and out of shape and a good adjustable seat like that looks pretty good to me.
