Router opinions new
      #307942 - 01/12/05 05:12 AM

This is not directly about ATM, but I would like your opinion. Which do you think is better, a standard router or a plunge router?

My main use for this will be for making frame moldings mainly with simple rabbeting. Since I don't think I have the space for a router table, I think the best way is to use piloted bits. But which type of router?

In that case, get the standard router. I don't know what your budget is, but they sell kits with a router motor, a fixed base (or a D-handle base) and a plunge base.

Thanks Tom. Doing things yourself is not big in Japan. I have yet to meet a Japanese that have painted any part of their house for example. Because of this, the selection of routers is fairly limited so I may not be able to find a kit, but it is good to know.

One thing I noticed when I was there...all construction is hidden behind tarps. I saw lots of construction happening, but it was all hidden. The fixed base will probably meet 80% of your needs.

Yes, it is done out of concideration to the neighbors - keeps the dust and dirt in as well not making the hood look like a construction site. Of course, they make some of the ugliest building I've seen, so may it is to hide their embarrassment. An interesting thing is some still use wood for scaffolding. Not so much down town, but in the burbs.

Thanks again Tom.
