I get the funny feeling that this is one of those things where the slang means one thing in the U.S. and another in the U.K. But, I could be wrong.

It's different depending on where you are. It is better to be a Happy Camper in the US than in the UK.... A Happy Camper in the US is somebody who has left the house behind and is enjoying some solitude with nature. They often stay in a tent, or a pop up camper, or an RV (took the home with them). Often astronomers do this to get out to some really nice dark sky's for a few days or, if you are really lucky, weeks. I won't say anything about a Happy Camper in the UK. This is a family forum.

Well, to be camp is ...
... just Google "camp" and "definition" and look at Wiki's entry for Camp (style)!
However, we here in the UK understand what you mean when you talk about being a "happy camper" and don't usually take the wrong meaning.
As rcd points out, sometimes slang in one country means something QUITE different in another
