Zeiss Telementor questions
      #3095292 - 05/09/09 10:45 PM

I acquired this heavy little scope this week, and I would like to be able to use 1 1/4" eyepieces with it. I have only had the chance to observe with it one time, through suckerholes illuminated by a nearly full moon.
It came with 2 ep's, the highest power being a 16mm. I would really like to see what an 8mm TV plossl would show in this scope.
I do not want to alter the ota.
Is there an adapter that will fit into the end of the tube, something like a threaded tube?

Tommyhawk13... I really can't stop just yet OK that should do for a while. You my friend may have gotten one of the better deals on a classic telescope in many moons. A Zeiss on craigslist! Yes there is a hybrid diagonal which will slide into a .965 draw tube and accept 1.25 eyepieces. Make sure the Zeiss draw tube is .965. I have an old Nikon that is stepped down in a way that I'm unable to use the hybrid diagonal. I think you got yourself an incredibly awesome telescope...good work!

Thanks for the info! It had been so long since I've looked through a .965 ep that I had forgotton what they looked like. I have one of those diagonals around here somewhere, from when I was using my first scope, an earlier (not vintage) Meade 60mm.

So...
How did you now I got it on craiglsist?

Oh, we know all about you... Actually very few vintage scope ads on Craigslist or eBAY or any other online source gets past this group. A few keywords on Google and you have the world at your finger tips. Of course that doesn't mean you can always convince a craigslist seller 2000 miles away that you are legit and pose no risk. You having this scope show up in your hometown was very fortunate.

Were you looking for a Zeiss, or was this find serendipitous? Did the seller have some story as to how they came to own this scope? Although we saw the photo from the craigslist ad when it was first posted here, we would love to see some pictures now that it's yours. Oh one more

Keep us posted, and welcome to the classics forum!

Talk to Bob Luffel at Alpine Astro. He is the nearest thing you have to a Mr Zeiss, and is a darn good guy as well.
Without some specific research I figure the nest way to accomplish what you seek is for him to supply an M44 to T thread adaptor and then a Baader diagonal with 1.25" eyepiece holder.
The rear of the Telementor (and you don't mention if it is a Telementor One or Two??) will have a peculiar to Zeiss thread, M44x1. Bob will have what you want.
Enjoy the scope,
Gary

Tommy,

You should be able to find and/or have machined for you all the "M44-to-anything" adaptors you need.

Also, do not overlook that the rear part of the telescope can be unscrewed itself: with an adaptor you may also have a full illuminated field for 2" eyepieces. One would not think of the Telementor as a deep-sky instrument but let me assure you that spanning with it at 15x with a wide-field eyepiece can be real fun.

If you don't want to go so far, by all means get yourself at least the H-40 (and a prismatic turret).

Also, do not overlook that the 0.965" Ortho (and Huyghens) are of *excellent* quality. If yours came dirty or fogged inside, be aware that they can be serviced with ease. You just need a little precision screwdriver to open them up in a clean dust-free environment. With 5 minutes cleaning you can turn all of them into "as new" conditions.

If you need any help, fell free to drop me a line.
Have fun with the Telementor! I am sure you will...

Max

Perfect advice Gary, i own a Telementor one and tried a hybrid diagonal but was unable to reach enough in focus. The adaptors at Alphine worked like a charm, but as mentioned you need to know which Telementor you have. My Telementor has the helical focuser which makes it a "one" the "two" has a focus knob about a quarter way up from the rear of the tube. The adaptors are expensive but worth it, i enjoy using both .965" as well as 1.25" eyepieces in the scope. BTW the scope fits very nicely in a Unitron 3" short or long cradle for use with a Unitron mount. You are in for a treat, please let us know how you make out and post pictures.

A small scope that gets used often is a better investment than a big scope that stays in the closet.

Unitrons, you spend more time looking at them than you do through them.

It is a Telementor II, and from the literature that came with it, I believe it was made in 1986.

"NR 89861" is written on the mount.

The owner is a foreign missionary, and there is a receipt from Hong Kong from 1998. Judging by the pamphlets that were included, he may have used it to teach children astronomy.

Thanks for the tips!

Max i am very interested, would you have a link or info of the adaptors numbers? I would love to get the most out of my Zeiss.

Hi Tommy,

I would recommend taking Gary B.'s/Max L.'s advice and have a M44 to 2 inch adapter machined or use one from Alpine Astro's Baader M44 to T2 System.

If you go the custom machined route, I highly recommend Ashley Stevens of Precise Parts - he is an artist with a lathe.

The Telementor is fantastic, but you need to be able to use 2 inch or 1.25 eyepieces. Most of the hybrid diagonals are of poor quality and would ruin the optical perfection of the Telementor. The Telementor II can be adapted to 2 inch eyepieces with no limitation on their fields of view. You now have the best small telescopic ever made - and one of the absolute best double-star 'scopes. I agree with Max, it is a great Deep-Sky 'scope, the sky is jet black and the stars are pinpoints - look at the Pleiades with a 32mm eyepiece next Fall.

best regards,

Steve

Brian,

No link, just self-made adaptors. If I am not mistaken, once you remove the bak, the Telementor OTA has something like a 73mm thread. From there you can do what you wish. There are internal diaphragms, but nothing that would prevent the use of a 2" eyepiece, which is inside the light cone.

Give it a try !

Max

>>Talk to Bob Luffel at Alpine Astro.<<

As Gary Beal, my wonderful friend from New Zealand, suggests, talk to Bob at Alpine Astro. He is the Zeiss go-to guy here in the USA. I am lucky enough to live in the same town as Bob and have made many deals with, through him, and met him personally. There is no better person to deal with, and few that I think are more knowledgeable about Zeiss than Bob.

Regards,
Don
