How tall is the mount with the standard (WO) tripod?

Can the friction be adjusted in altitude and azimuth?

Can you lock either axis completely?

Sorry Mike, I don't know. I have mine on a steel CG-5 tripod and 16" extension which is really solid and versatile.



Can the friction be adjusted in altitude and azimuth?


Yes, the knobs allow you to vary the friction from "can't tell" to "can't move" and everything in between ... the mount is exceptionally smooth, so much so that most folks don't notice the lack of slow motion controls.



Can you lock either axis completely?


An absolute lock? No, but when then friction knobs are tightened down you can't move either axis.

Hi, Mike.

IIRC, 53 inch high up to tripod base, up to center of mount saddle, 61 inch. Maybe +/- one inch

It sounds like the mount is tall enough to keep folks from having to crawl on the ground when their refractor is pointed straight up. I'm thinking about moving up to a bigger scope in the coming months, and that might be just the mount for me.

The mount does not look, but when both axis' are tightened, it holds really well. Of course I only have the 80ED.

Well, I have the EZ-Touch, and I found that with a heavier scope, e.g. 16 pound refractor, the altitude tension will not hold it up if the scope is poorly balanced. Scope will move up or down on its own unless you properly balance it, no matter how tight you crank on the altitude tension knob.

My EZ doesn't lock down in altitude either. If I take out an eyepiece it nose dives. David

That was the chief problem with the Orion Skyview AZ mount. Back in January I bought one, quickly discovered it lacked the ability to utilize enough tension to keep a scope from nose diving so I returned it. But recently Orion had the problem fixed. My new one works much better. Even with my heaviest scopes, when removing say a two pound 41mm Panoptic, if I lock down the alt tension knob the scope remains in place.
