The Sombrero Galaxy is an amazing object in small scopes. The galaxy shows an strongly elongated core in a lenticular halo. The core brightens sharply towards a blazing nucleus. The beautiful asterism Jaws (thanks, Demelza, for bringing it under my attention!) can be seen in the same low power field, W of M104. The three brighter stars of the asterism represent his teeth. Jaws appears to bend towards the galaxy. It’s a funny perspective, but don’t let this sight fool you. M104 is estimated to have twice the respectable luminosity of the Andromeda Galaxy.

What a great sketch. I now have an idea of what to look for when I attempt to view it with my scope.

Very, very, very, very realistic! I'm seriously considering to buy a 102/500 refractor myself. I just love those wide-field images. Sometimes even better than the high power images through my 12" Dob.
(ps. die schetsen van jou zouden niet misstaan op het astroforum, Rony!)

Thanks, Roel!
Roel, don't underestimate the views with your 60mm self made scope. It should do very well under dark skies, and it's a fine companion to your 12" scope.
