Request for Lunar Images new
      #3098716 - 05/11/09 05:05 PM Attachment (18 downloads)

Dear All,

My first and current scope is an APO 66mm refractor, which I use mainly to take images of the moon. Six months down the line and I'm already dreaming of more aperture so I can take higher resolution images of the lunar surface

I am now looking at buying my first reflector and thinking of a Maksutov-Cassegrain (MC) to gain more magnification and, crucially, resolution. With that in mind, I am unsure about what size to get: 90mm, 105mm or even 125mm. Clearly, the larger the better but costs and portability are currently a big issue so I am keen to know what resolution is achievable with each size.

With this in mind, would would anyone be willing to attach their best highest resolution image (including stacking/processing in Registax etc) of the moon with their ETX and also indicate the size of the scope? I would really appreciate it. Attached is my best effort with my 66mm refractor of the Apenninus range (image is a stack of 30 individual shots). Similar images, particularly of Hadley Delta, would be great for comparison purposes but any region of the moon would be a good help.

Finally, if anyone has experience of more than one aperture size, then their subjective views would also be more then welcome.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice, much appreciated as always,

Nick

Hi Nick.I am sending you some of my lunar images. In order are Clavius,Bullialdus, and Copernicus. All were taken with an etx80 and modified webcam 640x480, and processing was done with registax v4 and noiseware. I used the internal 2x barlow stacked with an antares 2x apo barlow. Hope this helps you.

Rob,

Thanks very much for your images, particularly Corpenicus, which looks fantastic in detail and contrast. How well do you find the ETX-80 for tracking? Are lunar craters kept within the (CCD) field of view for a reasonable legth of time?

Cheers,

Nick

Thank you for the compliment on my images Nick. This is my first tracking scope, so I have nothing to compare it to. That being said, I find it tracks fairly well although centering and focusing can be challenging. If you haven't visited Weasner's mighty etx site, I highly recommend it, especially the "guest astrophotography" lunar section. It contains many images taken with all the etx's. Here's the link.
