What is a Meade DS-16 mount worth? new
      #3105256 - 05/14/09 06:34 PM

I have been watching this auction and am surprised by the interest.

What in your opinion is a mount like this worth?

And is it a good general purpose GEM?

Thanks

No more than what the high bid is on this at the moment...less than 500 bucks. I mean, it's an OK mount for visual use with reasonably heavy scopes (it was never enough for a DS16). Imaging? Fuhgeddaboutit.

I paid $500 for a complete Meade Research Grade mount including shipping. So no more than $500 i would think

Chas

I bought mine for $450.00 and took a short drive to pick it up. Handles a 62" long 6' f/12 VERY well. I'll get back to you on how it handles a 92" long 8" f/12.

Very old school.

I think the price is very high for what the buyer will get.

- An AC drive

- A no bearings mount with the current plastic inserts likely shot

- A mount that the seller freely admits (to his credit) was in very tough shape before the redo

- A refurbish job which you have no idea how well it was done until you use the mount

In my experience, I have seen several better Meade DS-16 mounts sell for a couple of hundred dollars at the max.

Could the higher bidding be because buyers cannot afford better mounts in this down economy?

I've seen several of those mounts for about $300 more than that, but those still had a 10" OTA on them. OTOH, while that price seems a bit high at first glance, try to buy a new mount for that price that is as strong...

For $500 one can build a better GEM.
