Herschels mistaken planitary
      #3112712 - 05/18/09 03:35 PM Attachment (59 downloads)

Discovered on May 12, 1787 by William Herschel NGC 6229 was first recorded as a planetary nebula. The globular cluster is located 8 degrees north east of Eta Hercules. Its listed at a distance of 100,000Ly.

Its small bright and compact and its easy to see why Sir William mistook this for a planetary. At low power it has a bright core , and is fairly round in appearance.

At higher magnification it has a slightly more oblong shape running north to south. The core becomes somewhat box shaped. Not much detectable granulation. And I could not resolve any stars at 152x.

Jim,

Very nice sketches, they both look great. This is that third globular in Hercules that is fairly easy to locate even in poor skies.

Frank

Excellent sketch Jim!

Parenthetical note: Herschel actually had quite a few mistaken planetaries, many of them are galaxies.

Both good sketches and nice to see the comparison/side-by-side presentation. Well done. Roland

Jim,

I agree that I also like the contrasting images side by side. Nicely done and good background information.

Jim,

An excellent observation of NGC 6229 showing the globular cluster resolved at higher magnification. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos
