Old Celestar 8 OTA on CG5?
      #3113274 - 05/18/09 08:47 PM

Hello,
I got a trusty Celestar 8 Deluxe, optically it has always been superb. However as I attach more and more accessories(those ones necessary for planetary imaging), it's prone to vibrations(RA motor vibrations).
I'd like to know if there is a way to attach my Celestar 8 OTA to a CG-5GT ... BTW, it's on "clearance sale" at OPT ( $ 590.00 )
Perhaps someone could tell me if there's a dovetail that fits my Celestar 8(or any other way). If so, where can I purchase what's necessary to mount it properly on it?
Thanks in advance!!
David

You need a vixen style dovetail for the C8. OPT sells them too.

Thank you very much Luke!
I did see OPT had such dovetails, but I didn't know the CG-5 was a Vixen style one
Now, would any vixen style dovetail do the job, or is there any recommended??
Thanks!!!
David

vixen bars are sold by almost every in this hobby, I just measured my Celestron 8 SCT & its 13".

There is one thing though, my Nexstar8 I tried to remove it from the fork arm & put it on the newer SE mount & got a bar just like you are doing but that scope did not have maching holes to put a vixen bar.

So get OPT to look & see if your OTA has holes to put a vixen bar. because the oringinal Nexstar8 was meant for the none removeable fork arm they did not put match holes on the front to back of the ota there were a couple screws holes but it would have been on an angle.

Hope that helps

Joe

You'll need "radius blocks" to mate the OTA to the dovetail. Screw holes should match up.

it should match but didn't in my case so better make sure & if you buy the vixen bar from them ask them to install it before shipping it out to you. They should be able to do this if you are buying a bar & OTA.

I bought some 8" rings and mounted a dovetail to that to mount my Nexstar 8 OTA on a CG-5, Works just fine.

David, I used this Vixen-type dovetail bar on my de-forked Nexstar 8 OTA:

http://www.amazon.com/Orion-8-Dovetail-Mounting-Plate/dp/B000YPRVFI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1242731777&sr=8-1

and these curved mounting blocks to make unnecessary drilling any hole on the OTA:

http://www.astronomics.com/main/product.asp/catalog_name/Astronomics/category_name/CUHH9F3HKV579LMJ8CC9R6WV80/product_id/VCB8

No drills used or any holes inflicted whereever; all stock off-the-shelf parts. Does the job and the 8 OTA is now securely perched atop my newly acquired CG-5 GT. Hope this helps.

Best,
