A Seyfert Galaxy in Canes Venatici
      #3113631 - 05/19/09 12:51 AM Attachment (62 downloads)

At a distance of 25 million light years away, M-106 is a bright spiral galaxy with about the same tilt angle as the Andromeda galaxy. This galaxy measures about 30,000 light years across and glows at a magnitude of 8.4. Like M-77 in Cetus this galaxy is a type II Seyfert galaxy. Pierre Méchain found it in July of 1781.
Nearby there is a 12th magnitude edge-on spiral galaxy (NGC 4217) among a group of bright foreground stars. In years past using a 10" scope, I was able to spot this galaxy before the urban sprawl erased it from my sky.

Sketching:

M 106 (NGC 4258)
Date and Time: 5-18-2009, 4:50-5:25 UT
Scope: 10” f/5.7 Dobsonian. 24 mm eyepiece 60x
8”x12” white sketching paper, 2H, HB, 4H graphite pencils,
blending stump, scanned and inverted
Seeing: Pickering 8/10
Transparency: Average 4/5
Faintest stars visible overhead 4.3
Temperature: 10°C (50°F)
Galaxy magnitude: 8.4
Distance: 25 mly
Location: R.A. 12h 19m
Dec. +47° 18'

Frank,

A wonderful sketch of a very nice galaxy to view. I know from my home I can still see it, but I fear in ten or so years that may not be the case. I also like the purple border your using.

T5 and Jay,

Thank you both.

Tommy5- Likewise I hope you are getting in some observing time. The transparency has been good. Saturn has been impressive. I enjoy observing it when it is near east quadrature.

Jay- I hope your sky holds up for many years to come. I really look forward to galaxy hunting each spring but I find the drives to truly dark skies have become quite long.

Frank,

An excellent sketch of M106! This one is so much fun to observe, so I'm glad that you nailed this galaxy from your backyard.

Rony,

Thank you.
This is a nice large bright galaxy. I can't see this one with 4 inches or less aperture.

Here is another galaxy I captured last night.
I used a larger scope to get at least some detail on this galaxy.

NGC 4565 The Needle Galaxy in Coma

I observed this fine galaxy 2 nights ago with a 10” Newtonian/ Dob. The night was very transparent however my yard is in the urban sky glow of Chicago so I did not expect too much. I tried again last night with a larger scope (18” Newtonian/ Dob). This time the view was better although I needed to stay with the eyepiece for an hour to get the galaxy to show its features. I have observed this magnificent galaxy from truly dark skies using much smaller but more effective scopes; never the less it is nice to know I can still reach this one as the area in which I live has become totally urbanized.

Sketching:

NGC 4565
Date and Time: 5-20-2009, 4:15-5:20 UT
Scope: 18” f/5 Dobsonian. 24 mm eyepiece 95x
8”x12” white sketching paper, 2H, 4H graphite pencils,
blending stump, scanned and inverted
Seeing: Pickering 6/10
Transparency: Average 4/5
Faintest stars visible overhead 4.4
Temperature: 15°C (60°F)
Galaxy magnitude: 10.4
Distance: 53 mly
Location: R.A. 12h 36m
Dec. +25° 59
in Coma Berenices'

Frank,

An excellent observation of NGC 4565 (Needle Galaxy) in Coma Berenices. This is an outstanding edge-on galaxy to observe, especially in larger apertures. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Nice sketches, I especially like the one of the Needle Galaxy. You've captured the dust lane very well. I'll be posting my own sketch of it soon, as I was sketching it at the same time you were.

Excellent sketch and a favorite object of mine. There is something about an edge-on with the expanse of the in-plane view that is breathtaking to me. Roland

Roland,

I agree with you fully. All those stars across all that edge on distance. I get the same feeling on a clear summer night looking toward the center of our own galaxy. It boggles the mind. Thanks Roland!
