Poll: What Size Binocular Do You Use Most Often?
      #311364 - 01/15/05 11:06 AM

For this question you can provide two answers, because many of us use a handheld we keep on the observing table and a mounted binocular for observations. Of course your answers will be influenced by how many choices you have available to you, but that's fine. So tell us, What sizes of binoculars do you use most often? Let's find out what people are using out there.

6x30 - vote, 7x42 1 vote, 8x21 - vote, 8x30/32 2 votes, 8.5x44 1 vote, 10x32 1 votes, 12x36 IS 1 votes, 15x56 1 vote, 15x63 1 vote, 16x50 - vote, 8-16x40zm 1 vote.

8X32 is not listed either. I'd think this size is getting more popular for terrestrial viewing. For me 4mm exit pupil is fine for daytime viewing and 8X32s are more comapct and lighter in wt. I am not sure why but many 8X32s roof prisms have wider 7.5 deg FOV than most 8X42s with 6.3-6.5 deg FOV. I would probably go with a 10X if I get a 42mm bino......

Currently(since March 2003) 20X80 LW for astronomy by far, also use them instead of a spotting scope for long range terrestrial viewing. They work great for aircraft ID too. I handhold the 3.6 lb LW for short periods by grasping the barrels near the objective or with elbows braced but they are mounted 90% of the time.

Bought the 8X32 last May(2004) thinking it would be my all around day time bino but found I miss high power binos for nature observing. Just purchased 12X50 RPs to fill that role. I keep 8X32s in the car because of the wider 7.5 deg FOV but prefer 12X50s for open field observing.

The 8x40 for daylight, but a 7x42 or 8x30/2 works well, too. For astronomy, the 12x50 on a monopod if I am not using the 7x42, on its own. The 8x40 is my all rounder.

I tried two different ten power binoculars and found that I could not use them for astronomy without some kind of support. Since I needed a support, I decided it made sense to go to a twelve power. With a mount, like my monopod, handling a 50 mm objective was easy. Therefore the 12x50 made sense for me.

Hi Erik, Ed, etc... I've used the CloudyNights reviews for years. Even wrote a review for a telescope a while ago. I generally don't care too much for reading web forums (i prefer email or usenet) but i thought i'd give it a try since all my friends are here. ;-)

None of my favorite sizes are on the list, so here's a few "add ons":

FUJINON 6X30 FMTR-SX (best "finder binocular" in my opinion, wide 8.2* FOV, FMC, exceptionally sharp, amazing depth of field -- 20 ft. to infinity, field flattner lenses, sharp almost to edge, WP/FP, long ER, also good for marine use, the IF EPs somewhat limit their use for birding, mil specs, very ruggedly built, significantly heavier than most 8X30/32 porros. Oversized prism housing may be hard to hold in small hands and prisms are inverted so most of the weight rests on your thumbs. I found them more comfortable to hold upside down. Production discontinued. Price ranged from over $600 at marine optics stores to under $400 at discounters.)

NIKON 8X32 SUPERIOR E (pulls double duty for birding and wide field stargazing, superb for both, exceptionally sharp on axis and sharp to within 5% of the edge, very good color correciton, long ER, FMC, 10 ft. close focus. Price ranges from $450 to $599.)

NIKON 8-16X40 XL ZOOMS, (in many reviewers' opinion, the best zoom binoculars ever made. Though 40mm may seem smallish for astronomy, the exceptionally sharp views, ability to "dial in" the appropriate power, and smaller exit pupils than 50/60mm bins yield pinpoint stars and very nice views of brighter DSOs against a dark background from light polluted skies. Sharp out to the edge, close to Nikon SEs in resolution. Not as good for close-in birding due to overlapping barrel shadows near close focus (can focus down to 20 ft. w/out eyestrain, shadows disappear at about 30 ft.) and the need to refocus both the left diopter and central focus for each power when zooming in (no diopter refocus necessary when zooming out, so I usually start at high power and zoom out). The 5.2* FOV is wide for a zoom binocular, but like telescope zoom EPs, the AFOV is smaller at low power ("tunnel effect") but increases rapidly as you zoom out. Excellent as a long distance "spotter". I haven't compared them to a FMC good quality spotter at 16X, however, I would suspect the Zooms might yield better contrast due to their two-eyed binocular views, though they are not FMC (MC). ER is short (12.9mm), however, the small exit pupils make glasses unnecesary for mild to moderate astigmatism. Weighs less than 2 lbs. Production discontinued, however, still available at Hotbuys and Focus Camera for $579.)

Regarding Ed's last question , there is no comparison for me all in all . I use binoculars almost every single day hand -held in daytime.

On the rare occasions when it is clear and I'm in the mood for skywatching at night , I almost always use either 10 x 50s or 15 x 70s MOUNTED.

After using binoculars mounted I get very frustrated with the relatively unsteady view when hand-holding for astronomy , but I still prefer to lie down on a comfortable lounger and look through binoculars , even if that means a few shakes. Hence my preference for 7 x 42s and a desire to get some Image Stabilised binos.

Regards, Kenny

I sold the Fujis (and traded my Nikon 10X35 E2, another favorite) to purchase the 8X32 SE, because I do more birding than stargazing these days due to the perpetual cloud cover over Central PA, so the 8X32s I use the most for handheld observing, both day and night. However, I just bought a Celestron Noble, and given this unusually rainy winter, they may become my new handheld favorites if they are as good as the reviewers say and fit my face and hands comfortably.

I've tried many different types of mounts (commented briefly on them in another thread). I always found them lacking for one reason or another so for the past year I've been using my zooms handheld for birding and bracing myself in a lounge chair with padded arms when the occasional sucker hole allows me a peek at the night sky.

However, even while braced, I've experienced "mounting problems" at higher powers due to a familial tremor inherited from my mother's side of the family, so I ordered a pistol grip Bogen/Giotto combo monopod from Oberwerk, which was shipped on Friday. So I expect the Zooms will again become my favorite mounted binoculars.

If, for some reason, the "gun on a pogo stick" doesn't cut it, I may have to sell my beloved Zooms and a couple other bins from my collection and buy a 12X36 IS II. In fact, I almost did this just before Christmas, but then took my ads off A-Mart and decided to give the monopod/Zooms a try.

Since I bought my first pair (Nikon Action Lookout IV 10x50s, I have used them the most, but the most often used and more time with over the past year are the 20x90 Oberwerks, which will be replaced by the Stellarvue 20x85.
