Last night my $20 department store scope surprised me good. I've heard people say countless times that nebula filters don't work well with small scopes, and I'm now convinced that it's total BS. In addition to showing the veil better that the unfiltered 10"(maybe that's not a fair comparison), I got very nice views of the Eagle and North America nebulae, which are completely invisible unfiltered, even in the 10". I wanted to sketch the NA nebula but it's just too darn big... so here's this instead.

Part of the veil:

And M22 with a few resolved stars:

Looks good to me. And what is the "cheap" scope? Looks like it worked well with the filter. Rolnad

Thank you both.

It's the christmas special from two years ago, I think it's called 70AZ or AZ70-A I'm not sure... It's a 70mm with a 600mm focal length on an unstable tripod. The views are great though.

I too have always wondered why so many amateurs perpetuate the false notion that narrow band filters are not appropriate for small scopes. It all comes down to exit pupil diameter, and whether the object is large enough for the necessarily lower magnification that the small scope must work at.

It's an unending task educating people to see that the light grasp of the instrument is NOT the sole factor to consider. A 5mm exit pupil on a filtered 70mm scope offers a view equally as bright as a 5mm exit pupil on a similarly filtered 400mm scope. It's just that the magnification on the big scope will be nearly six times greater, allowing to resolve smaller objects (assming similar surface brightness.)

TE,

Excellent observations of the Veil Nebula, Albireo, and M22 in your "cheap" but excellent refractor. many observers are surprised by the amount of objects visible in small aperture instruments. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Carlos
