Both seem to come with the same mount. I wouldn't be surprised if they were both made in the same Chinese factory.

They are similar, and definitely aimed at the same market segment. Not the same factory (or nationality), though. The Celestron comes from Synta in China and the Meade from Jingua in Taiwan.

I don't have a firm preference for either OTA or either mount (I've owned both setups). It comes down to controller preference and small details (the C has a better dewshield, the M has PEC, etc.).

I suppose it's now down to whether I like the black look of the Celestron over the white of the Meade. It would be nice if Celestron had a similar approach to error correction as Meade addresses with PEC.

Add a Moonlite focuser and an Atlas mount and you get the "yard canon".

Well, it's not my first scope, but it has just arrived. I just spent about the last two hours reading everything from the top. Amazing. I think I like the Moonlite focuser for it. I will try photography with it. Still not sure which scope to use for a guidescope. At an even g-note the new Orion premium 102mm ED refractor looks like a good deal. Almost the same price as the whole C6RGT! A 2x barlow will get the fl out to 1428mm which should do the job. Keith

Hi all.

Some of you might remember my newbie thread on purchasing Refractor advice. Well, Last Saturday, my C6 RGT arrived. Haven't used it yet due to bad skies. Anyway, I've been reading on here that it's best to try and replace the stock focuser with a descent one. The name Crayford keeps popping up.

Please click on the link below and scroll down a bit. I'm a UK citizen and have managed to find a dealer here in the UK that looks like he sells all kinds of extras.

Is this the kind of focuser I should be looking at for my C6 RGT?

Yes the one listed for the Synta, Celestron or Orion 150mm is the one you would want. Not sure of the focus length but you may need to also get an extension in order to get enough out travel for focusing. I bought the Antares/GSO and it was not long enough and I needed the extension tube to get the length in order to focus.

OK, thanks guys.

I also see that they come in various colours. The red (Standard), one should make for a nice contrast against the black I should imagine. Then again, maybe I should stick with black so that it matches. That would cost a few quid more though. Decisions, decisions. I never thought I would be upgrading so early on. I think I've caught the telescope bug.

Oh by the way, I nearly forgot. Is it quite easy to take out the stock focuser and replace it with the new one?

Thanks.

Tailwinds,

I have a C6-rgt, along with the Moonlite Dual-speed focuser. The Moonlite is top-notch Quality...i.e. Beautiful fit and finish.

I think the standard Red color is very nice, but I realize that Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. At f/8, you'll be perfectly suited with the single speed focuser, but if you want to put out extra "quid", for the dual speed unit, than by all means do so.

One advantage of the Dual speed model, is that it allows you to mount up to 10 pounds of weight (Digital Cameras, web cams, etc.) on the focuser without slipping, as compared to a 5 pound limit with the single-speed unit.....evidently the Dual speed unit provides more friction thru it's gear system than the single speed.

As far as mounting the new focuser, just remove the three screws (that are 120 degrees apart), that go through the OTA, and attach to the focuser, pull out the focuser, and install the new Moonlite using the same three screws. I do recommend that you use a "Cheshire" device to check collimation. Moonlite collimates their focuser's to be dead on when shipped, but I found that I had to adjust mine, because it turns out my OTA was not cut perfectly square.

I hope this info helps.
Don

OK, even though it's been 3 years since this thread started, I get to jump in now. First, it was indeed a great article. I have just recieved my new C6R OTA, although being a truck driver, I haven't been home to see it yet! I look forward to making the mods on it that suit me. Already have a CG5-ASGT mount, as I bought the C6S-GT a few months back. Lovely little scope, really impressed by the mount. And Scott (aka SRF), it appears we are sort of neighbors. I'm over the line in Washington Parish. Nice dark skies over here. Haven't read all the posts yet, but I'm working on it. This is the 4th scope in my current collection, and the 2nd refractor (AT66ED is the other, travels with me). I decided after reading many different posts on different sites to get this scope. I'm sure I will love it. Think, since I name my scopes, that I will just call this one "Cannon".

If you pick one upgrade for the C6R, it should be the Moonlight focuser... It is a wonderful piece of equipment and it makes a good scope great!

I love my scope and it makes a great companion to the 7 inch Mak.

Finally got home to see it. WOW, it is big! But beautiful. And the Moonlight focuser is high on my list of things to acquire for it. I will be going with the 2 speed. Hope they have it in Black. Going to get Astro-Tech's 2" Refractor Diagonal for it also. And some weights! Ya'll weren't kidding about it being nose heavy.
