Just got a notice in the mail that I have a parcel to pick up. I suspect it's my 150/1200 Skywatcher with Chromacor...

Update soon...

They do. I have a black MoonLite on my Burgess 1278. The MoonLite is a great product and transforms the scope IMO. You'll love it.

Can someone post a pic of the scope with someone or something next to it. I need some scale. I really want to see how big it is. I'm almost ready to press the "purchase" button.

I am thinking of buying the C6R ota for my CG5-astg mount. I am a visual observer but I have started to dable in AP, and I think this might be where I want to go. I have a DSI color and I was wondering if any one has used the scope for photogroghy? If so can some one post a couple of pics that they have taken with this scope? It is a used scope that I would be getting and it is a killer deal. I just want to see it is suited of CCD AP or only for visual only.
Thanks guys,
Dan

I think you'd be better off mounting your 130 SLT ota on the CG5, if you want to try your hand at astrophotography. The C6R will be a little slow photographically, and will exhibit a fair amount of chromatic aberration.

It is also a heavy scope...

Thanks for the info Roger. On that note, do you know if there are rotating rings available for this scope. I have tried to mount it to the cg5 but when is slews the ota truns upside down and it is very hard to use that way.

They are probably out there, but I don't really know where to send you. :-(

That, IMO is the EQ mounted newt's biggest problem. Of course, it can be fixed with the rotating rings (if you can find them)...

OK, even though it's been 3 years since this thread started, I get to jump in now. First, it was indeed a great article. I have just recieved my new C6R OTA, although being a truck driver, I haven't been home to see it yet! I look forward to making the mods on it that suit me. Already have a CG5-ASGT mount, as I bought the C6S-GT a few months back. Lovely little scope, really impressed by the mount. And Scott (aka SRF), it appears we are sort of neighbors. I'm over the line in Washington Parish. Nice dark skies over here. Haven't read all the posts yet, but I'm working on it. This is the 4th scope in my current collection, and the 2nd refractor (AT66ED is the other, travels with me). I decided after reading many different posts on different sites to get this scope. I'm sure I will love it. Think, since I name my scopes, that I will just call this one "Cannon".

I look forward to meeting you sometime.

I haven't had any issues with the standard tripod being inadequate, and that's with a Moonlite aftermarket focuser (tri-knob model) attached. I do however use Celestron anti-vibration pads on my wood deck, so that helps. I'm sure the Atlas mount would be better, but I don't think the stock tripod is insufficient. Imaging can give some nice shots, but the brighter Planets/Objects you're going to have to deal with Chromatic Aberration.

Here's Venus from I think 2004 or 2005

More.. By the way, this is back when I was just getting started in using a low-light Security camera for imaging (Polaris Camera)...my skills at getting the color right, had a lot to be desired. I also over-processed this image, so it got a bit grainy.

More.. Uranus.

The c6-rgt isn't the easiest scope to use for imaging, but it can be done, Visually I love this scope and I've gotten 480x with awesome views of Saturn on the right night. I haven't done imaging in a couple of years, but if I tried a Baader Semi-Apo filter, I'm sure the images would improve a lot.

Overall, I think a Schmidt-Cass. has more practicality for imaging than an Achromat, but if you do more visual than imaging, the refractor seems to beat out the Scmidt-Cass. I compared my buddy's Celestron C8-sct (with the XLT coatings) one night years ago on Saturn right next to my scope. While his 203mm gave brighter images than my 150mm, Saturn was definitely sharper in my scope, as well as having sharper more pin-point stars.

Don,
Was that pic of Saturn taken with the C6? If so, was it taken before you upgraded? The reason I'm asking is because I don't think I'll be able to up grade the scope for a while. I am on a very limited budget.
I think I am leaning toward AP. It seems the more I do it, the more I want to do it. The scope that I want is only $400. I don't think that I will find an 8" SCT for that small amount of money. But as you and many others have been doing this for much longer than I, I will take your advice to hart.

Dan, not sure what you mean by upgrade?? and Yes, it was taken with the C6... I'm assuming the Moonlite focuser??? I think that image was shot with the stock focuser, after I improved it, by degreasing it, and shimming with U.H.M.W. tape (ulta high molecular weight tape) similar to Teflon.....I was still not happy with the stock focuser, and went with the Moonlite. I believe I used a Sirius Optics MV-1 filter with that Saturn shot to reduce the Chromatic Aberration, but it could have been taken without the filter.....don't remember. The Sirius filter cuts Chrom. Aberr. quite a bit, but gives Saturn, Jupiter, a Yellowish/greenish tint.......I hear the Baader Semi-Apo is THE filter to use for Chrom Aberr. The C6-rgt's seem to vary in Optical quality. I got a nice one, but sometimes a not so great one comes outta Celestron. I've been a very lazy Astronomer the last two years, but before that, I used the C6 quite a bit. Quite a number of people have been happy with using the stock focuser, and degreasing the Synta "Glue/grease", then adding Teflon tape or U.H.M.W. tape to reduce play. I got the stock focuser where it had pretty much zero play, but it felt too stiff and awkward, even with the tape added, and using Lithium grease. That's why I went with the Moonlite...and never looked back. Feel free to ask me any questions....the C6 is quite a nice scope , but needs a little "tweaking" to be more user friendly. Also another advantage of using the Moonlite, is that it adds weight to the eyepiece end of the tube, which allows you to raise the OTA up higher in the scope rings..this makes the eyepiece higher off the ground, with less fatigue on your back.

I fell in love with the C6R the first time I saw an ad for it a couple of years ago, the price seams right, the size is not a factor, 90% of my viewing will be in the back yard, and it shouldn’t over tax my very limited ability. I just joined this forum a couple of hours ago, and had a lot of my questions answered. BIG THANKS! Of the two scopes I plan to buy this year, this is the one I had the most questions about.

ducatirob, thanks for the welcome, I hope that before the snow fly’s this fall to be setup with one, mind you that this being the first day of spring there is snow on the roofs around here this morning. I knew that it was a big scope, but did not relies it was as massive as the photos show. I did think of using it as a spotting scope on those rare times I get to do real long range shooting, but I think that may be impractical with this beast. Do you know of any shops in Ohio, particularly the Columbus area? Thanks for any help.
