As I have posted elsewhere, I have managed to look through my "cannon" twice now, and am really impressed. I did do the focuser upgrade, before I even looked through it. The Moonlight, single speed, in black. Looks very cool, and works even better. Have the Baader Semi-Apo Filter waiting at home for when I get there next. Don, Scott, and Trever, you have been a large helping of information, and I thank you. And now that I have learned we are NOT moving back to Tennessee, I also look forward to meeting you sometime, Scott. Real dark sky where I live, and I will be building an observatory for 2 scopes this summer, while on vacation. We have a pretty large yard, guess I could host a small star party sometime. In the future, I hope.
Doug
P.S. Lest I forget, thank you, Harley, for the really fine original post that ultimately caused me to buy this scope.

This original post must have sold a bunch of C6-R's and Moonlite focusers. I had not used mine for many years until I came across this post. I had given up with the poor focuser and difficulty of using high power. I had never heard of a Moolite focuser and after reading all the posts and especially Scotts, I built my yard canon, too. Wish I knew who stated this post. I'm sure this post will keep encouraging others to buy a C6-R or upgrade them, for a long time.

Yes just the newer name the RGT means Refractor goto telescope on the new ASGT (CG5 with steel tubular legs and goto computer control) mount. This version also has the adjustable cell, some of the older models Cr150HD did not. Hope this helps. Bob

Yep an adjustable lens cell and a name change is pretty much it.
Some of the CR150's had the adjustable cell towards the end of the production run prior to the name change. The Yard Cannon was a CR150 with an adjustable cell.

Wow, never seen so much on one scope before. Must be a testimony to how good it is for what it is. Let me see if I can summarize all this. (I was looking at this scope before and was steered away from it.) The scope is excellent for deep space objects, but has some color in brighter objects like planets and the moon and bright stars. It can be reduced best with the Baader Semi-APO filter and eliminated in software on the computer. A chromacor 11 is also very effective in eliminating stray color. The mount and tripod it comes with is not the best but by putting it on an Orion Atlas mount it becomes very stable and photography is possible. Only question here is how long of a photograph is possible before adjustments need to be made? The focuser is a joke and needs to be replaced by the JMI Moonlight focuser and an Antares 2" 90 degree diagonal keeps you off the ground to view. Did I miss anything? I was looking at this scope for it's light gathering ability. I have a 12.5" Meade dob but am not happy with it's views and know a refractor will bring up the contrast to quality views. For views where the stray light is a problem, a smaller APO will fill in the gap.

Get it, you won't be sorry. I got mine as an OTA. It currently rides on a CG-5ASGT, which is a good mount, just not quite beefie enough for this scope. The CA is very low in mine on bright objects, and non-existent on dimmer ones, but I do have the Baader Semi Apo filter, which does indeed remove what CA remains in mine. And yes, I did install a Moonlight focuser. I use the Astro-Tech diagonal on mine. The view is killer, pinpoint stars and high contrast. This OTA is a "best buy" in my opinion, and I am very glad I own it. I will be even gladder when I get a mount that can really carry it.

Rollis,

I have a CR6 and live near OSU.

PM me if you would like to get together to see a CR6 in person.

Just about everything you mentioned is true. Here is mine , with MoonLight focuser, Atlas mount , can't see the CA filters, and different finder. All these modifications were form tying to build a "yard Canon II" after Scott's famous "yard Canon". It does work and not just with better contrast and sharper stars, but much wider field. M80-M82 are nice with lots of room on either side, stars are points, and beautiful contrast. With my SCT, needed a focal reducer, wide-field eyepiece and then I could just get them in, but low power and dull field stars. I didn't get the C6-R for DSO's but once I started to use it on them, I knew I had a scope for DSO's and not just the planets and the Moon.

I own a Cr-150,with a CG-5 mount. the mount is fine for visual alhough some prefer the stiffer atlas mount, as long as their is little wind the objects don't vibrate at all once thety settle down, i bought vibration pads which cuts the wiggles in half and bought a wooden tripod to replace the alumium legs which were aweful on the original, using the aperture mask 4.5" f-12, will eliminate most of the ca and sharpen /darken planetary inmages,as will the aggressive use of narowband color filters which i prefer over a mv type filter.I still use the stock focuser but have added an helical focuser from Orion for 49$ which works as a fine adjustment focuser and allows focusing in real time, i feel it is my most valuable addition. Dso are sharp but since i live in a near chicago light pollution destroys dso so i use it mainly on lunar and planets. Here is a sketch i made last year on jup, actually more detail was visible but beyond my drawing skills.

And don't miss the fact that the latest two pictures from Doug76 and Bill show both use mount extensions. The Skyview Pro mount extension from Orion fits the CG5 and the Atlas has one (a bit shorter) available as well.

These work well when you're trying to view objects near zenith. Otherwise, you do something akin to praying to the refractor gods on your knees.

I agree using the aperture mask 4.5" f-12, will eliminate most of the ca. I use it most of the time on the Moon and planets and remove it for viewing DSO's.

Any body know how the the C6-RGT compares to an Antares 152mm refractor?

Also, how about the Sky watcher 150AR EQ-5 PRO, and is the mount that comes with it the same as the Celestron mount

You got that exactly right! Plus it keeps the OTA from hitting the tripod's legs.

Doug:

Have you ever looked through an Antares 152mm. It has a shorter focal length so one can see wider views. I am wondering which scope is superior or if each has advantages over the other in different situations. Does one show more color in one view where the other superseeds in another view or does one scope out perform the other.

Thanks:

Bernie
