Harley, Excellent followup on what has become a very informative thread. Great photos by the way.

Very nice follow up Harley. Sums up the scope pretty well. Get the SV.

Yep, nice follow up Harley. I think the C6R is a great scope, the only downside I really see to it is it's size in the aspect it can be a bit of a bear. But all in all a great scope that also appears to wet ones appetite for APO's....

Harley, have you changed the dew shield to a lighter one yet? I am trying to figure out how to get the stock metal one off. It seems that it should unscrew but that doesn't work.

The cell has a front lip which the dew cap is slid over. Do not touch any of the screws they are part of the lens cell and are intended for collimation . To remove the dew cap give it an even hard pull and it will come off.

Thanks Stan. I kept thinking that the screws maybe were part of it, but a voice inside kept saying "Don't touch". Now I'm glad I didn't mess with them.

Alpha1 - I made the same mistake - I thought the entire cast unit, with the extension, was the dew shield. Once I discovered that the end easily pulled off, I felt a little silly. I never did replace the dew shield - I solved the balance problem with a Telrad and mounting plate instead - I kind of like something substantial protecting the glass.
Pollux - this could be a first for the medical journals.........

What happened? Did it turn into a reflector or something?
Hey, I can make jokes like that since I have a reflector!

Reason why I said "my scope is sick because I am sick" is I did something stupid.
I was so sick in the last 13 days and I was so bored at home and I took out the lens from the tube and forgot to make mark. Then after I put the lens back in the tube the collimation is so out (scope is sick now). I still haven't done anything on this yet.

Pollux,
Sorry to hear about your scope. Check the archives for possible solutions for the lens matching problem. Did you check to see if the makers left any index marks on the edge of the lenses.
Just curious why did you have to take the lenses out in the first place. Were you going to do some flocking. On the 5" prototype the whole lens cell comes off the front of the OTA{ held on with 3 screws}. Do you have to take the lenses right out of the cell to do tube work on the 6"
Hope it all works out.

Pollux,
If it's just the whole cell mount it's no big problem. If it attaches like mine to the front of the OTA just keep rotating the cell till you get it's correct placement for collimation to the tube.
You can work on this in the daytime using high power and a klint on a distant telephone insulator to check your collimation.
Trial and error and it should work out fine.

Harley, I was late reading this post, but man what a list of practical information, even for those with other similar refractors.
Thanks for the workman like summary. A lot of people new to this hobby could benefit from your experience since some of the issues with a large refractor are not unique to your particular model.
