Lynn,

Thanks for the kind words - so many people on CN provided me with information that I figured this was one way I could help someone else trying to get started.

Regards,

I just want to say thanks for all the recommendations for the C6-R because they got me to buy one.

I didn't get the go-to mount; I didn't even get a Celestron mount so I can't really post much applicable information in the C6-RGT thread. I'll start a thread tomorrow with some pictures of my new setup (and maybe some information about myself since I'm new to the site).

At risk of going off topic, anyone compared a C6 RGT with the newish Meade AR6 AT?

What happened, This is not a "Sticky post" any more. This thread was the reason I bought my C6R.
Here's too much good information to be lost in the depths of old posts!!

We will keep it alive. I have a new dovetail bar coming from Kerry. I will report on it when I add it to the Yard Cannon.

Scott; If I may ask,why the new dovetail bar? Is the original not rigid enough?
I'm saving my disposible money for a EQ6 mount. Should have enough in another month, just in time for Mars. The LXD75 is not cutting it. Are you still happy with yours? should I get a solid bar when I get the new mount

Jim,
I have an internal counterweight that weighs about 3-4#, a heavy Moonlite focuser, a heavy Antares 2" enhanced diagonal, and an Orion 9x50RA finder on my scope. It all adds up to a lot of weight and I was getting a little flex out of the 13" dovetail bar. I decided to make the setup as stable as possible, so I went with a solid bar. For a mount - I would not go smaller than an Atlas (EQ-6) for this scope. I want my scope as stable as possible and I am determined to eliminate any weak links in the performance. The mount is definitely worth the money. Now I only have to add a DSC setup and an external power source and the project will be complete.

I would also suggest an Astrozap flexible dewshield - it shaves 2# from the front of the scope and is felt lined to reduce scattered light. I am very happy with this scope and I plan on keeping it for a long time.

Here is a pic of the Yard Cannon as it was configured about 6 months ago. I sold the extension post and it is otherwise as it is in this pic.

Scott, do you have balance problems when you change eyepieces? With the LXD75, When I balance it for for a 2" eyepiece, and change to a 1.25" the balance is thrown off. The clutches won't hold good when slewing or tracking. I'm thinking about fabricating an adjustable counter weight, like I saw on the "clasic 6" refractor post.
I saw in your post, that you were looking at "Argo Narvus"
DSC's. Are they a direct fit, or is it a serious modification? What do you think of the "Sky scan option" from Sky watcher?

I think that you are absolutely right about the mount . The CG5AS mount is just able to handle the C6R OTA . The Atlas ( EQ-6 ) would be a much better fit . I did not realize it until I put a 127/8 refractor on the CG5 , big difference . My only problem is how do I tell my wife that I need another mount

The picture you posted answered another one of my questions. I guess you decided the extension was not needed. with the LXD75, I sit on a cushion on the ground when observing at the zenith. My dog, who is my observing companion loves to come over and give me a big wet kiss when I'm in that position. So far he hasn't slobbered on the eyepiece yet. Although He did annoint my Dob base when I wasn't looking!!

Jim,
No balance problems at all. The Atlas is rated at 40# - 55# depending on who you ask - it is a rock.
I am still studying the DSC possibilities, but after reading the reports on the Argo Navis - I think that is the way I want to go. There are direct bolt on kits for the Atlas (EQ-6).
I think the SkyScan is cool, but the database is small compared to the Argo Navis and it requires disassembling the Atlas. The DSC's bolt on externally.

William,
Sell your current mount first - then you obviously need a mount for your refractor...

Jim,
I sit in a chair when viewing at zenith. The big Atlas gives a lot of options. I removed the extension because at anything other than Zenith - the scope was really tall.
