Weekend M94 sketching fun for all
      #3117557 - 05/20/09 08:46 PM

Frank's post on M94 has gotten a couple of us interested in going after it. I am going to try to get a newbie group to tackle it, too. If anyone else wants to give it a whack, it might be a fun weekend to catch it and post it here, if you wish. Some sketches from many and varied instruments/methods might be kind of neat. No need to reply to this to say your interested....just post a sketch when you get a chance.

Roland

It's not quite the weekend yet, but I did this one last night, so I think I'll post it now...

Thanks. Our plans still remain to get some newbies to tackle it Saturday night with one of two scopes. Should be interesting. Roland

Hope others are faring better than me. Winds have been constantly above 25 mph where I am, so setting up was not wise. Roland

No luck for me this weekend. I have the flu and my PCP told me on Friday that they have seen an uptake of Influenza A and even though I had a shot last fall, it has worn off.
So I'll just continue to be miserable and hope I feel better each day (somewhat better today than yesterday). Good luck to those who can try again!

Roland,

A graphite sketch of M-94 I did 23 years ago under much better sky conditions than I currently have. 10" f/5.7 Dob. 12 mm eyepiece 119x. July 18, 1986 10:40 pm local time.

Man, that is just pretty. Makes me salivate but the winds are still too high here. Will try Monday evening (I hope) and if that fails then Tues/Wed from South of Fresno rather than the windy Mojave Desert.

Frank,

An excellent observation of M94. You have captured the appearance of this galaxy very nicely. It is unfortunate that our skies are not as dark anymore. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

TE and Frank,

Very nice sketches and they are interesting to compare with.

Here is a 4 inch low power view from a few weeks ago. I had it posted on the forum before, but it's a good idea to put some observations in one post.
Sorry Roland, it's not from the week-end. But I have very unpredictable weather conditions.

I apologize for being so late but we have been on the road and pretty busy. On Labor Day (US holiday) we finally decided to sketch in the desert....wind or no wind. It was windy, but we still captured M94 together using a C8 that was fitted with astrovideo equipment. As Frank captured, the galaxy does seem to have layers of density as one goes out from the center but the astro video also enabled us to begin to see some of the spiral structure. It's a pretty dense object, so getting this with a hazy/sky glow evening with wind was a little iffy but we tried.

It was a very nice night to give thanks.

"The heavens declare the glory of God...."
so they did this night...
