Here are last night's sketches.

I finally built up enough courage to try M51, and I think it turned out alright. It only showed one arm clearly through the skyglow, with only hints of other structure.

M94, I may have seen a hint of an arc, but it could have just been contrast with the sky. Not much to say except it's true this one is very bright, and it seems to resemble a planetary to me.

M8, the UHC brings out a lot of nebulosity in this one. Compare to this sketch I did last year.

And lastly, the fetus nebula. This is the first time I observed this one. It has a very odd shape, it looks like a seahorse to me. It's also pretty bright, so check this one out if you haven't already.

TenthEnemy,

You have just been sketching away. I really like all these sketches. I would guess the M-8 sketch was the most time consuming. Beautiful work.

TenthEnemy,

I wish we could see M51 lkie that.

We were out last night looking for it but could not find it.

Tom

Thanks for the comments.

I actually spent more time on M51, but most of that was me trying to separate what I was seeing with my eyes and what I was seeing with my imagination. M8 is bright enough that I didn't have to spend any time teasing out details. I didn't realize just how impressive and large M8 was before doing that sketch, maybe not as nice as M42, but it's close.

Tom, what size telescope were you looking for M51 with? This one can be both tricky to find and to see. It has a relatively low surface brightness. Just keep trying.

Nicely done. I think the Fetus is one of my favorite planetaries (although I've always thought it looked more like a seahorse).

Tenth,

Wonderful sketches and wow, look at the growth! I think you've done a stellar job on these items and you've given me something to aim for this weekend, Fetus. Thanks!

TE,

Excellent observations of M8, M51, M94, and NGC 7008. The companion of M51 is easily visible. You captured the dark lane of the Lagoon Nebula (M8) very nicely. The Fetus Nebula (NGC 7008) is an interesting planetary nebula. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

V-e-r-y nice indeed! I like the way you captured some of the subtleties of these objects. Hopefully we will see more in the future.

Thank you all. I've actually never looked at a picture of 7008 until Carlos posted that one, very colorful and interesting, looks like a jellyfish in that picture. I almost sketched the Bug Nebula instead, that's another interesting one that I just saw for the first time. Even though it's low in the south I saw a fairly obvious protrusion on one end.
