How much does a shroud weigh? new
      #311879 - 01/15/05 09:01 PM

In designing my new scope, I've gathered weight metrics for nearly every conceivable part, and am using a spreadsheet to attempt to balance the torque around the pivot point.

Only one number remains as a total fudge - what the heck does a shroud weight, anyway? This would be on the smaller side, I would think, being for a 10" F6.

Any data points would be appreciated. Thanks!

Doug

Did Kreige have this listed in the bible?

I'm thinking standard ripstop nylon as Kriege & Berry advocate... but I can't find any #s in there! Just one comment somewhere I think about weighing next to nothing. Now I don't know if that means 6 oz. or 2 pounds (hey, it makes a difference!).

Oh I'm sure it's only onces if it's nylon. That stuff is light and you are not using much. If it is light ripstop you can go to a fabic source and they will tell you the weight per yard. (I think it's per yard - in any event it comes in different weights).

Plus it is spread across the center of gravity. Consider it negligable and don't worry about it.

OK, I've dropped my estimate to just 6 oz, which my spreadsheet shows contributing a minor 6 inch-pounds of (top heavy) torque. I'd gloss over it, but its funny how this stuff adds up... best to have at least an educated guess in there for everything, I think.
