Hello Everyone,
I have not kept up with the ETX line over the years and it seems as though the ETX90 PE Premier Edition non UHTC is selling for a low price these days. Could someone please tell me a little abou this particular scope, how it compares with other versions of teh ETX 90? Is there anyhting particularly "wrong" (perhaps to strong of a word) with this scope? Owners of these scope; do you like them? Thanks.

Are you sure that there is a 90PE is a non-UHTC version?
I thought that all PE scopes were UHTC versions.

Nope, the ETX-90PE is just the latest in a long line of ETX-90's. Could you provide a link to the one you're looking at? The only issue I'm aware of is the LNT module on the PE came in two styles; early versions used a red-dot finder with a miniscus lens mounted off to the side that proved to be fairly fragile, later versions used a more robust deign with a lens mounted on top of the LNT module. Other than that, it's an ETX.

The one they show in the picture is the latest model PE, you can see the lens for the red-dot finder above and behind the tube. This should be a nice little scope at an excellent price. Just add a couple of patches of Velcro to hold the controller and you're all set.

I just caught the deal at Woodland Hills for the UHTC version with the Astro-tube for $499. Still in stock! It is my first telescope, so I hope it was a good decision. My plan is to get a 10" dob as my second.

Hi Pillguy
Welcome to Cloudy Nights and the ETX forum in particular.
I doubt if you will regret the purchase of the 90PE. I have the slightly larger ETX-105 and (when it isn't broken) it is a fabulous "grab-and-go" scope.
I have no experience of Dobsonians, but due to their size, I would expect that you will use the ETX more often. That's a good sign - the best scope you own is the one that you use the most often.

Does anybody know if optics in NexStar 4 are comparable to ETX-90 UHTC or rather ETX-90 non-UHTC?
I'm asking because NexStars seem to be always in the same price range as ETXs but they don't advertise usage of any special quality optics.

Hi goe
Wlecome to Cloudy Nights and the ETX forum in particuar.
The NexStar 4 is a Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope (simply referred to as a "Mak") as is the ETX-90.
The NexStar and ETX mounts both have built-in wedges - for polar alignment and astrophotography (but, truth be told, neither is really suitable for AP unless it is for bright objects such as the Moon). The NexStar 4 also includes some sort of control for a digital camera (I haven't got one so cannot comment further on this). Both the NexStar 4SE and the ETX-90 have a flip mirror which allows you to attach both an eyepiece and camera at the same time and simly "flip" between the two as required.
The ETX-90 has 3.5" aperture, the NexStar 4 haas 4". Generally speaking the optics of the ETX series of Maks (the ETX-90, ETX-105 and ETX-125) are said to be have sharper optics than the NexStar 4, but there's probably very little in it in actuality.
The NexStar 4SE has "Sky-Align" technology which makes alignment of the telescope with the very sky easy.
The ETX-90 (in PE guise) has auto-levelling and North location. Alignment is relatively easy - but not as simple as the "Sky-Align" method of the Celestron.
Also, the Celestron has, I believe, a larger database of celestial objects.
Apparently the addition of UHTC coatings on the Meade scopes adds about 15% to the light transmission.
Hope this helps

Well, Meade sold the ETX-90/105/125 since 1996 without UHTC..
Remember the testing between EMC super-multi-coatings and the UHTC was tested in the laboratory with specialized optical test equipment which is far more sensitive to the light spectrum compared to your eye's..
Question is will your eye see a difference between EMC super-multi-coatings and UHTC... I doubt it..

Think about it. UHTC was not available when the ETX series first came out. That means most ETX people never knew the difference and never cared.
The non-UHTC will give you great pleasure, enjoy it.

The prices look pretty good. I can't imagine plus or minus 15% brightness (with or without UHTC) would sway me away from a good price point ($170 savings on non-UHTC! in the link above). $499 for the UHTC model is OK -- I recall getting mine (same model) for $469 a couple of years ago. But $329 for the non-UHTC PE seems great to me, and I definitely would have bought that at the time, had it been available. The savings would have almost paid for my favorite travel lens for the scope, the Hyperion zoom.

Bad news on the ETX90PE with UHTC...sounds like Meade has yet to ship and most dealers are out. They are saying mid June, but who knows!
