Deep sky sketches with a 60mm scope!
      #3125682 - 05/25/09 05:24 AM Attachment (67 downloads)

For the last 2 nights I have made some deep sky sketches with my home build 60 mm F/6,9 achromatic refractor. It's made out of a 20-year-old Novalux 60/415 lens and some spare parts from various other scopes. The chromatic abberation is horrific om Moon and planets, but this tiny telescopes does give me surprisingly pleasant views of some of the brighter deep sky objects. It made me so enthousiastic I want to sketch evering I see through it! I also have a 12,5" Dobsonian but sometimes, when time is short and weather is unpredictable, bigger is not always better!
All sketches are made under a suburban sky. M8 was only 15 degrees above the southern horizon when I made the drawing.

And the last one: M8 and M20. (Probably because I used an Orion Ultrablock filter, most of the M8 star cluster and M21, that also should just be in this FOV, where invisible)

This is the 60mm telescope I used for all of the sketches

Roel,

These sketches and I mean all of them are just beautiful. With a dark sky a 60mm scope can be a great performer. It also helps to be able to sketch as well as you.

Frank

Roel,

Very impressive observations of M8/M20, M13, and M81/M82. You have an excellent deep sky instrument in your home made 60mm refractor (it looks very nicely constructed by the way). Many observers do not realize the potential of smaller aperture instruments, such as you own, for the observation of Moon, planets (if the color is not too objectionable) and deep sky objects. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Carlos

Lovely illustrations! They're very aesthetically pleasing, and I espeially like the 'just right' amount of sky glow.

Your telescope looks awfully similar in design (but not colour) to my Carton 60/420. With it I tried an 'experiment' on M13 some years ago. The combination of a couple of Barlows and short f.l. eyepiece gave a ridiculously high power and resulting exit pupil of less than 0.5mm. But I managed to resolve a number of the brighter giants in this 30,000 l-y distant cluster!

Roel,

Small scopes are great (and instant ready) instruments.

Excellent work on the sketches.
