Jeff,
Most enjoyable sketches! Wonderful work.
What is the aperture of your scope?
With a reading of 20.4 on the SQM, I personally would not complain about astronomical twilight conditions.

Thanks, Rony!
It's an APM 16" f/10 Mak-Cass.
The 20.4 didn't last long: by 2:40 local time it had already brightened to 20.1 as the sun started to head back around. I didn't grow up at 54°N, and I still find it decidedly eerie.

Very, very nice sketches. That M51 is incredible, makes me want to get to a dark sky, and buy a bigger telescope.

Jeff,
Ok, first things first, beautiful capture of the images and objects. Your details are as always first rate!
Next, what a beautiful scope, congrats on it.
Third, I assume you built your observatory?! What an incredible job. I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't having some weird fever induced dream. Incredible. Thanks for the sketches and all the links.

Thanks, Frank and Tenth!
The 16" Mak is indeed a joy -- but dark skies are even better. My 10" Mewlon shows me essentially the same view of M51 from under a Bortle 1 sky (SQM ~21.8) in Colorado.
Cheers, -- Jeff.

Jeff,
Outstanding observations of M51 (nice spiral arms and companion), M106, and Abell 1656. You have recorded all of these objects very nicely. I tuly enjoy observing through my 9-inch (23-cm) F/13.5 Maksutov-Cassegrain, but your 16" Mak-Cass is a dream scope for anyone. I can only imagine the views through such a fine instrument. I hope that you enjoy observing through it for many years to come.

Thanks, Michael, Eric and Carlos!
I wish I had the big Mak under darker skies, but I just have to remember back to when I had an 8" SCT in San Jose, CA, and I could count the sum total of galaxies I could reach on a single hand. I guess it's all relative.
I definitely need to make a trip to the Winter or Texas Star Party one of these days, sketchbook in hand....
