the grass is always greener...
      #3129616 - 05/27/09 03:59 AM Attachment (45 downloads)

Been following Scout72's thread on Samsung SDC-425ND video cam on this forum as it's within my price range But last night thought I'd test my existing USB2 CCD cam [Starlight Xpress Lodestar] plus laptop in 'movie-mode' on my piggybacked 70mm f5 OG [Meade ETX-70] to see how it faired in short exposures of 1s - 8s on M13.

Results below were a surprise - the main frame is a 4s exposure with auto-stretch 'on' and as downloaded/refreshed every 4s via the USB2 connection. For the surrounding images I doubled the exposures up from 1s and contrast stretched each via the camera software. Normally my DSO exposures run to many minutes like here but it's amazing what even brief exposures reveal. Ok - the camera is very 'fast' being monochrome and unfiltered and I'll stick with it for now

Hey- that is a great surprise! Very similar to my results through my 80mm refractor at integration times up to 2 secs with the other camera.

Have you tried this camera through your larger scope for comparison?

Did look at your M13 YouTube vid and a bit confused if the images are realtime @ 1/60s video frames or 1/60s x256 refreshed - they don't seem to go as faint as my SX Lodestar on my ETX-70 but could be wrong
