As I recall, these scopes originally sold for $1,195 from Coulter. At $400, you would not be taking too much of a gamble, just make sure that the mirrors are intact. This is a BIG telescope; you will need two people to move it and a van or large station wagon for transport.
Many amateur astronomers fashion a lighter truss-tube Dobsonian around the primary optics. The cost of a comparable solid-tube 17.5-inch 'Dob' today would most likely be four or five times higher than the Craigslist scope.

What is this particular Tasco scope from yesteryear?
I believe this to be the 9TE-5. My 12TE-5 has dual slow motion controls. I don't believe the one in this ad does. That, a few variations in accessories and the difference in focal length were the differences that I'm aware of.

just went over to check it out, happened to hit the last 6 minutes of bidding. the last 30 seconds were interesting as the lurkers, snipers and 'bots kicked in...went from $1075 to $1575, the winning bid.

Still not a bad price considering its condition. I was the one who asked if shipping would be out of the question. Sadly, it was.

If I didn't already have one... I'd have to snag this for about half the asking price to consider it a deal. Hard to find item. I think it is a circle T, but you might ask for a few xtra photos emailed, to be sure. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/for/1281039613.html

Steve there is some strange stuff with this cave # 1 the mount looks to be a 1" shaft or made of parts of both? or something like that. It is not correct look at the way the mount hits the pier very funny. Also the legs dont look right there not Cave legs???

the 12.5 cave looks to be mounted on a parks EQ mount and pier. most likely when cave had trouble completing telescopes in the mid seventy's era. lookie here cave with parks mount notice shorter distance from motor housing to pier tube. owner said its 1.5" shaft. i will soon find out. i still have this just in case.

i talked to owner for 1/2 hour last week
on phone and he bought it from a friend who owned it for a couple of years and he has owned it from then on.
he said this is the way it came from cave as he used it when his friend owned it.
i did some scaling from photos as owner said tube was almost 16".
i used 2 photos and both times i came up with 1.5"
shafts.
definitely going to pull the mirror on this one.
picking it up sunday.
