If I lived closer I'd consider it, but, since it's not exactly what I'm looking for I'll pass it along:

Wow!
What looks to be a nicely decked out Meade 826 (I think these were called "856's" when they had the guidescope), in a contortionist pose!: Meade 8"
Price is very high. I may send seller an email offering a link to some info about the scope (in the hopes it'll encourage them to reconsider their asking price if they want it sold).
-Tim.
Well, the price had dropped by a third, but it's still double the original price. I sent the seller a link to Phil Harrington's old Meade ad page and Robert Provin's old catalog page, and told him I used to work at Meade when his scope was made.
He replied that he believed his asking price was right.
okey dokey!

While historic, these aren't always that great optically BTW. I've used 6", 8", and 16" Clarks in the past. Lots of CA.

12.5" f/8 Optical Craftsmen mirror on the bay: OC 12.5" f/8 mirror
I placed a bid and sent the seller a question. He indicated that it came from a "salvaged" OC telescope. I'd be interested in upping my bid if that scope still exists and is restorable.
But I wanted to go ahead and post this in case there are others here in need of such a mirror for an existing project. I already have one 12.5" mirror I'm not using! (but it's an f/3.5!), and a 12.5" f/23 Cass that I AM using!
-Tim.
Won't happen. This seller, who I've dealt with before *many times*, makes his business buying up astro gear, parting it out, and putting the parts up on e-bay/craiglist.
Every now and then he puts up ads asking for Unitrons or scopes, making it seem like he's interested in them for nostalgia. Perhaps he is. But then, perhaps the ones he gets don't have enough of a hold on him, for they get parted out and put on ebay incrementally.
If you talk with him in person, its his business that he lives off of. He complains bitterly of ebay items he ends up selling for a pittance, since ebay won't let him kill too many auctions that don't go his way.
Some get upset about this, some think its ok, some just don't care. Thought you might like to know. There have been many CL posts about him doing this that I've read over the past 3-4 years.

He did send me a reply. He said the mirror came out of an OTA only, no mount, and that he's already sold off the other components.
A shame. Dobby said some years ago that an Optical Craftsmen that he has beat a Cave optically when he compared them.
I sure know my 8" f/6 mirror, that's now in my Springfield, is one heck of a mirror (but it needs recoating - I can shine a flashlight through it!)
Wait a minute! I parted that scope out myself! But it was a "discoverer" not a Connoisseur with the bigger mount and rotating rings. The 12.5" must have been!

A small scope that gets used often is a better investment than a big scope that stays in the closet.
Unitrons, you spend more time looking at them than you do through them.

Sears 60mm in So Cal: Sears refractor
Good price, too, it seems. But I gotta draw the line at nothing under 76mm, just because!
Well, that and I've got a few lenses in that size range that are begging me to make OTAs for them!

Just got back from looking through the 36" Clark at Lick Observatory. Trust me, you'll see better through a 60mm department store scope with a good eyepiece.
The experience of the huge dome, rising floor, and enormous "cannon" of a scope are priceless.
Of all the Clark's I've used, the 6" was the best IMHO. The 16" wasn't half bad either.

I just corresponded some more with the seller. He asked if I was interested in it, and I replied probably not, but I would pass the link on if someone here might be.
He's willing to come down to $500, but won't ship (from Orange County, CA). I personally think that's a bit high still, but from the pics it does appear to be in good condition, has the guide scope option and some sort of drive corrector or power supply mounted on the pier. They are jpegs, of course, so I'm obviously not certain of the quality.
So, if anyone else is interested in a Meade 826 with a couple accessories, the link's above.
