I recall the ads in Sky and Tel, and I think I saw one on astromart a few years ago. I've never seen one in person and they certainly don't seem common.

Here is what looks to be a nice 3" Unitron Alt/Az mount and so far a good price with only a few hours to go.

It's baaaack! Pentax J-60 was auctioned last month for a final bid of $328.77. The description was and still is confusing. Perhaps the last one who "won" thought it was a J-80 and gets a re-do. Mikey C. examined it and posted his impressions on this thread last month.

Well maybe the "winner" got caught up in the heat of bidding and decided to let it go. I would have thought the runner up would have been given a shot. But I don't know the nuances and ins and outs of how some things work and how some peoples minds operate. But back to the scope. It is in my opinion in very good to near new condition. The box is cardboard. It's all there. But honestly it still has that "look" and "feel" about it that says $150 max. But I'm not a Pentax afficianado so maybe I'm all wet...that's just me tho'. Mike

Hey Andy, I'm not going for this, so good luck if you decide to bid. However, go carefully. I seem to recall this scope on Ebay about a year ago, and it didn't make the full auction time, and was pulled by Ebay. I made an inquiry at the time, but the seller didn't respond.
Rare, high value item...seller with zero feedback...registered on Ebay the day the auction was listed...

Richard, I'm not gonna bid - I don't have that much cash to spend...
Just thought it looked rare and interesting... and yes the auction would make me very nervous.

Regarding this lens.. I used this scope for ten years before dismantling. Lens did show some CA but acceptable. What was surprising is how good the optics really are. I had Roger Cergoli (from the Stewart Mirror lab) lest and clean the optics. Interfearigram shows better that 1/13. Records show that Lundin did this lens who was the principle optician @ AC.
Maybe this one is not so mediocre.

Well this time around it went for $87. Is this what they call deflation? If someone here got it, you know the drill!

Upon further evaluation of the photographs, especially looking at the size relationship of the focuser to the diameter of the fiberglass tube, this COULD BE A CAVE OPTICAL CO. 12.5-INCH, 14.25-INCH, OR 16-INCH. Cave used that same mounting design on those Observatory scopes. If so, then the seller's "inherited" reflector telescope is an extremely rare one.
Comments from Cave collectors?
Just got it reassembled and you should know you were correct, it is a Cave 12.5" Observatory model. Biggest, baddest darn scope I ever did see. From my limited use to date (due to lousy weather of course) I can report the mirror is the best I've ever had. Even in somewhat need of a recoat it delivers stars that are better than tack sharp. Haven't seen any planets yet. I look up naked eye and see nothing then look through the scope at starfields, quite amazing. The OTA is in excellent condition and the rings are smooth. The mount could use a little TLC but nothing serious, mostly cosmetic and some wiring restore. If I kept it I'd disassemble everything and do it right.
Wieghing in at almost 600 lbs, I needed 2 new tires after the 2 hour drive home which I was lucky to have made in my work vehicle, a 1990 Honda Accord .
I had no idea how massive this instrument was and almost passed on it because I had doubts about actually getting it home safely but as you can understand I just couldn't leave without it. The seller was very helpful getting it apart and loaded. He even loaned me nylon tie-downs for the OTA.
Anyway, now that I'm loving just looking at it I realize I don't have the room or time to build a proper observatory for such an instrument. I may be letting it go to someone far better equipped and ready for it. I'm not letting it go until I get some nice clear nights with it though. I may be dumb but I'm not stupid .
