Needs varnish, but a nice improvement in tube mobility and, likely, stability.
Will this be a permanently mounted pier or transportable?

for now all i can say is ,i have expanded my legroom
there are still vibrating issues but it's about as equal as with the tripod
so it's good for now but i will tweak it in the very near future

Stephane,

In my opinion this combination will never work vibration free because these Vixen mounts where never meant to support this kind of telescope.
BTW if you want to improve the wooden mount, to dampen the vibrations, i would add some triangles on all the four sides of the pillar.
But as i see on your pictures, you still have your old parallactic from our course. It maybe would be better to use this one and make it higher as i did for a folded refractor. Works great.
See ya....

the original will still be used for the "urania optics" mirror
as soon we move out that is
as for the one i use it is not completly finished
there need's to be some tweaking done
i also think aboutfilling it with sand
oh well we'll see
oh and welcome to this forum

Filling it with sand Stephane, would do the job indeed. But i did some small caculations. If i'm not mistaken the plywood is 18 mm thick. So there you have a volume of about 20x22x100 cm(just guesing) is about 440 cm³. Depending on the weight of your sand you should have a telescope pier of about 70 to 100 kg (140 to 200 lbs).
Your back is going to protest...i think....

hey chris
i realize the weightissue
but if you take a look at the scetch i made you'll see it's divided in 3 sections
also the maximum height is 70cm not 100cm
and the "i.d. " is 175mm*200
i was thinking of filling just 2 sections the upper section is open so i can easely remove the eq head
as for the wieght issues of the scope
according to the manual the mount has a max load of about 7kg
this newt tips the scale at 5kg (it was 7kg in the original tube and was very backheavy
hm guess i did a bit of a good job reducing weight
hey chris i'm also thinking of rebuilding this scope(again) to reduce more weight
if i have time on my hands i'm gonna try to make a lighter mirrorholder
