I just went out to observe with my 60mm refractor. I found the Porrima and Xi Uma all showed themselves as elongated Airy disks. Can't be defined as splited but can be felt as close doubles. Very nice experience!

Hey, great work Lexeen! I think you cannot truly split those doubles with a 60mm scope, but at least you identified them as binaries.

Lexeen,
Star tested a newly aquired Tasco 80mm f/15 last night.
xi Ursa Ma was very nice at 200X. I might have seen a split on occasion but a nice view and an obvious double in any case. Porrima on the other hand at 200X was elongated with no hint of a split, so I found xi to be the easier of the two.
Cheers, Bill

Seeing was at best average tonight with lousy transparency, so I decided to just take a quick peak at some doubles.
I had my TV-60 out to look at Porrima with 2-4mm Nagler zoom. At 180x, I could definitely see the elongation. I even cranked it up to some ludicrous magnifications with a 2.5PowerMate. I was surprised at how good the image was at 360x, but with a super-lightweight mount it was rather difficult to track at that magnfication! But on one good pass, I got the impression of the elongation looking peanut shaped, but that was it.
This same evening, Izar was a clean split, with the pale green secondary sitting on the first diffraction ring, and the double-double was a nice clean split too.

I did a retest of my Tasco 80mm using modern 1 1/4 eyepieces and got a better view of Xi. The secondary had a greenish tinge and while marginal I'd say it was split about 50% of the time. It was a pleasing view. Porrima was just a better defined peanut compared to my previous test. Bill

Recently I made two aperture down-stoppers with cardboard for my 5 inch refractor. One results in 100mm and the other results in 80mm. On porrima, I found it can be resolved by 100mm with barely a dark space, very hard to be seen but I guess the dark line should be seen under better seeing. With the 80mm, it is just two closely attached balls without any space.
