After worrying about the job market and not really spending a lot of money this year, the family decided that we need a vacation. As the economy looks a little better, more money is coming in and since we didn't touch the severance package (I lost a job last year, but quickly found another), I (being the only one working) thought it would be a good idea to go some place we have never been and I wanted to try to fulfill 3 needs: 1) Good beaches 2) Some place we have never been 3) Something related to astronomy for me.
The kids had 1 need: 1) Pool And the wife also had 1 need: 2) Spa
So we decided to go to Hawaii. As we have never been and it meets all 5 goals.
One of the weeks in Hawaii we are going to be spending in Hawaii itself and one of my excursions is to go to the top of Mauna Kea.
I have several questions:
1) Can we bring a scope up the mountain? 2) Do any of the obervatories let you go inside? 3) Do any have scopes you can use? 4) Is it safe to bring kids to 14,000 feet?
I was thinking of getting a small APO to take with me, but my wife squashed that one, so I am hoping to rent or borrow a scope.
If anyone lives in Hawaii and will let me borrow a scope for 1 night let me know? Please PM me.
BTW this is not a fake post. I really am looking forward to seeing the KECKS.
Thanks for looking.

I believe you can bring a scope up to the visitor center at about the 9,000 foot level. As I recall from speaking to folks that have done the tour that is the case. The big domes do have visitor areas. As for kids, the website warns NOT to bring children above the visitor center at 9,000. Whether or not they are just being overly cautious, I can't say.
My high elevation experiences say that above 10 or 11,000 feet you will notice some symptoms that can be dangerous. The first one will probably be a splitting headache that won't stop until you go down hill. My 10 yo daughter and I climbed Long's Peak (14,256) many years ago, and I was miserable on the summit. Severe headache and nausea that lasted until I woke up the next day back at our campsite. Now of course, maybe I'm just a wuss.
Go to the Mauna Kea website and check it out. site

I didnt get to visit the observatories but I can tell you the skies are simply AMAZING from the beaches on Maui. I has a Orion ST-80 and it worked perfectly, I could see Omega Centauri naked eye! My family and I are going next summer, I will have my little C-90 Orange tube for that trip thankfully! I would just get an ST-80 or something. Maybe a Pronto? Either way you will be good to go.

You want to go to the Visitor Station. The website cited is full of info. Kids do as well as anybody else going straight from sea level to 14,000 feet -- which is to say, not very well at all. Expect anything from extreme difficulty walking uphill (universal) to severe headaches (common) to queasiness (fairly common). But it's not really unsafe, because you can always go down again. Life-threatening altitude problems take multiple days to develop.
Remember -- spending a long time inactive even at the Visitor Station is way cold! Dress for Northeastern winter, and then some.

Well I can't take one on the trip, but maybe there is an astronomy shop that I can buy a short tube refractor. The only issue is that I hate to waste money and to buy a telescope and then throw it out is so unlike me.I am bringing binoculars, but it isn't the same. If I could rent a scope that would be awesome.

My Lady & I made the trip last October and had a wonderful time. We went with one of the excursions that takes tours up on the mountain - they pick you up at a pickup point near your hotel, take you to the visitor center, feed you a box lunch, take you to the top for sunset and then take you down near the visitor center where they set up their own scopes (in our case a CPC 11) and we spent a couple of hours looking at the sky. They then take you back to your original pickup point. It ain't cheap, about $200 per, but what an experience.
PM me for any more details.

I was there in November. The best thing to do is to take a tour: they will drive you up to the visitor center and then to the top. It's a long drive and much of the road is pretty rough. Most car rental places forbid bringing their cars on the road.
You can't get in the domes but the trip to the top is worth it none the less. They close everything above the visitor center at sunset. The visitor center has a number of public outreach scopes. The tours also bring scopes -- ours had a Celestron 11". Unfortunately, our viewing was cut short by fog pushing up from the SE. But seeing and transparency was very good before the fog rolled in.
The rest of the island is nothing special in terms of the skies. On the east side (Hilo) it is cloudy pretty much every night, with rain on many days. The west side (Kona) is much drier with some clear nights, but still with an ocean haze. If you get away from the local lights it is a pretty good sky as there are no big cities on the island, but not as good as the mountaintop of course.
I think bringing some good binoculars and signing up with a tour is the way to go. No hassle (they pick you up in hotel-land on the Kona Coast, serve dinner, etc.) and you get to look through a bigger telescope than you can carry from home or buy for a reasonable price. The family will also enjoy it more. But it is a long trip from Kona (>8 hrs round-trip).

Sounds like you took the tour from Mauna Kea Summit Adventures like we did.
Another thing that they (and similar tours) provide is a warm jacket. When we were there in November, the temperature at the summit was about 40 degrees F with a stiff wind, so the jacket was welcome. We had a decent dinner, but one Japanese tour that we saw at the visitor center had Bento boxes that looked fantastic. But the tour narration was in Japanese.
Our tour at the top:

Have you already made hotel/resort reservations? The Kohala coast north of Kailua-Kona has the best climate on the Big Island for observing. Binocular observing from the beach is a great, relaxing way to explore Hawaiian skies.

Fog finally clears a bit after sunset. Everyone else on the tour is waiting on the bus while I take this photo, and the park rangers are driving up to chase us out:

This thread brings back fond memories. My wife and I made the trip to the big island in February of 2006. We also did the trip with Mauna Kea Summit Adventures. The skies at the VIS at 9000 ft just can't be beat. I had never seen the zodiacal light like that. I would recommend this company. My only complaint was that the viewing was just too short.
I brought my C5 and a light-weight tripod. It was an easy carry-on on the plane. I was glad I did. Rather then just wait in line for my turn at the C11, I had a chance to scan the skies for DSOs too far south to see from home.
I think the others have given good advice. I can only add the obvious: make sure you schedule the trip at or a little before the new moon. Even a slim crescent will be glaringly bright under these dark skies.

WOW This makes me want to go to the big island. Great pictures. Hey check out this website. It an astronomy group in Hawaii. The West Hawaii Astronomy Clubs. I'd write to them and ask your questions and maybe try to catch a meeting.

Guys,
I am so looking forward to it!!!! I can wait.
I made my reservations already. We are going for 13 nights in July, for 6 days we are staying in Honolulu and then we fly to Hawaii and stay at the Hilton on the Kahuna coast for a week. After looking at the pictures I think I need a better camera. Thanks all for sharing!
