Meade #497 with ETX-80
      #3151533 - 06/08/09 12:11 AM

I just won an auction on eBay for a Meade 497 that I'm going to use with my ETX-80. I hope I didn't incorrectly recall that the 497 works properly with the ETX-80.

Does anybody have any tips for setting one up with an ETX-80? The one I've won is unused, in new condition, just old stock from a liquidated retailer. Will I need to upgrade the firmware before it will work properly?

Yes has far i know its compatible, but if its old it means have a older firmware, you will need to upgrade the firmware for the latest one (because in the old ones doesnt appear the etx-80 on the list of scopes, many choose the etx-70 one in this older controll so the scope works fine) but i think its a better idea to upgrade the firmware to the latest so the etx-80 appears on the list plus maybe maybe better tracking and less bugs around.

Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely look at upgrading the firmware once I get it.

It works and having the number buttons is nicer!

Thanks Steve, that's what I'm hoping

Apparently the package has made it through Canada Customs this morning, so I'll probably get in Monday sometime.

I got my #497 last night, and it seems to work properly when tested indoors, or at least it will go through the alignment, slew when I pick objects. I'll be trying to get the Meade 505 cable set this weekend so that I can upgrade it to the latest firmware version.

Are there any gotchas with upgrading these guys? I think I've got firmware version 22e on it right now.

Once you upgrade the firmware do a RESET -- then Calibrate motors and train drives again-- be sure to re-enter TIME- DATE- and SITE-- and Daylight Savings Time = YES.

Calibrate motors with the same power supply you will use outside--

Like Joe said...but also, change the time (or at least double check it) AFTER you change the menu setting for daylight savings time to yes. I changed DST after setting the time and the first time I used my scope, it was consistenly off base. A check of the time showed it was an hour fast (so the scope was correct...it was just slewing into the future)

Thanks Craig. I'll make sure I double check that.... Nice to learn from somebody else's mistakes.
