LXD-75 dovetail slot
      #3156923 - 06/11/09 02:54 AM

Does anyone know about the reliability of the dovetail slot,
bolt, and screw on the Meade LXD-75 mount? I mean, is there a chance it could fail and drop a scope? Could it break or the dovetail slide down and out of the slot? I have a Meade 8" Schmidt-Newtonian on it and cringe at the thought of that optical tube falling off the mount!

While anything can happen, I would think that it would be very reliable. The SN-8 is mounted from the factory on a LXD-75. If you are concerned about the dovetail sliding, drill a small dimple in it and then align the bolt with the dimple and tighten. By the way, leave the vise grips in the tool box. Just hand tighten and you should be fine.

Richard,

I believe the mount's dovetail slot is fine and quite safe, as long as you tighten screws down. I think a better upgrade is to replace the cast dovetail on the scope's ring assembly with a solid aluminum equivalent. Cast pieces can crack and fail without warning, especially if overstressed.

I slept much better after replacing the dovetail on the AR-6 I have!

Regards, Marc
