It is one of the few planetary nebulae that are recognisable with a pair of binoculars. Point your binoculars at Gamma Sagittae (yes, the tip of the arrow) and shift your field of view 3 degrees to the north. M27 should appear in the upper part of the field of view. Look for a fuzzy spot just south of a mag 6 star. I found M27 brighter and easier to detect than M71 in Sagitta. My 15x70 binoculars actually showed a rectangular brightening, its long axis running from NNE to SSW. M27 is a nearby planetary nebula with a distance of around 1150 l-y. You have captured this ghostly shell of a star very nicely. The star field rendered is exactly what the observer will view. Thank you for sharing it with us all. A question and please excuse me if it has been asked. Are you doing the sketching of binoculars as a personal project? The only reason I am asking is that I think these would make an excellent rendering in a book for those using binoculars. I know you have your website but I think when your done capturing the Messier in binoculars you should publish them! I was thinking of you the other night when I was using the sky window in the SSW looking at the Sag. area. I don't recall you sketches from that area. Of course, it sure is dense with stars and objects so I will have to pick and choose carefully. I think I want to do the Lagoon with the window because the cluster is so beautiful in binoculars. I'm not nearly as good a sketcher as you on binoculars, but am looking forward to another clear night in the area to give it a whirl. All of your wide field sketches are superb. They remind me of my first nights with a new pair of binoculars in the mid 1960's as a young teen laying in my parents front yard at the edge of Portland Oregon. Your binocular sketches rekindle my memories of first seeing these Messier objects, as I just looked at your extensive list of other images. All of your your sketch work is a great learning tool for others to see through, aside from also inspiring veteran astronomers and artists. I observed M27 through various instruments at the Green Bank StarQuest including my 12x36 image stabilized binoculars. Your drawing is an excellent rendering of the binocular view. I locate it like you do--coming off the tip of the Arrow. BTW, I think you'll find M27 a little brighter if you can revisit it at a darker site. The conditions were not perfect during these midsummer nights. It's also a proof for the fact that M27 is a very bright object.
