Guy's it's mid-June in Calfornia and the weather is lousy!

I have still not first-lighted the CGE. Very, very distressing...

I may have to plan an impromptu road trip to the desert if things don't change here.

Regards,

Jim

I'm sure the desert could use the rain.

LOL:-) Petaluma.. I grew up in Santa Rosa, I can feel ya. I'm In the high desert in Oregon these days but still, rain rain rain for the last few weeks.

I lived in San Francisco for three years, and for the last year I lived in the Outer Sunset. I think I saw the Sun once during that year. But you do expect some clear days in Petaluma in the summer. In any event, given the drought in the Western U.S. I'm happy to see any rain in the Colorado Basin. But fog without rain is the worst of both worlds.

Hey- it was pretty clear here in the Bay Area last night- were you able to get this puppy out under the stars? I just got my new to me used CGE yesterday, but I had to spend the time getting my equipment area moved around and unboxing and setting up the mount....and if you did get the mount out..were you able to do your Ortho comparison as well? inquiring minds want to know!

Okay, first light accomplished. I used a 2-star alignment and 3 calibration stars. The mount's GOTOs were excellent, putting objects near center of a half-degree field of view all evening long. Unfortunately the seeing was some of the worst we've had recently so no critical eyepiece testing was possible really.

It's a very heavy mount and I would really tire of using it had I not purchased the Pelican rolling case and ADM knobs for it. Were I using a tooled set-up and the original box, the hassle factor in the form of long set-up, take-down and packing times would be too high for me.

All in all, I would say that for ~$2700 the "Made in USA" CGE is a bargain for its capacity and savvy, user-friendly electronics.

Regards,

Jim

Yep...I'll always have a soft spot for the CGE. Lotsa' good nights with one. And I'm glad you got a chance to give it a whirl. Do your part and it'll serve you well.

Also, the polar alignment routine is quited good. If you're going to image, do a couple of iterations and you'll have very good tracking!

David
