M81/82 Widefield (Equinox 80ED) new
      #3082993 - 05/03/09 03:33 PM

After the great response to my recent M101 widefield I just had to shoot M81/82 even though the moon was out with some heavy glow.

This is the third time I've aligned with my wedge and I attempted 150sec exposures, which I think may have been just a hair too much. I found this image hard to process as well, as it's hard to get both galaxies looking 'just right'.

Specs:
Equinox 80ED F/5.0 - Televue 0.8 FF/FR
Canon 450D Baader Modded
59x 150secs (147.5mins)
iso 1600, 7 Darks
Piggybacked on Wedge mounted CPC in EQ
Unguided
Stacked in DSS, Processed in PS

Widefield:

Very nice pic, especially for an 80, in my opinion though it's way too red

It is a bit red but it bring out that nice flare in M82.
I was imaging M82 last night and indeed you have to strech the red a bit to get that showing, or imaging in H alpha and combine.
A great widefield nevertheless.

I actually like the way M82 looks but with this pair you kind of have to process them individually and blend them together at the end.

Thanks!

I did have trouble with M81 on this one.. I think I may have another go around on it like Erik suggests. (separate processing)

Hi, excellent photo. Have a couple newbie questions though. Was this shot at prime or was a barlow/powermate used. Also what the heck does Baader Modded mean? I see that a lot with cameras used modded/un-modded. Still waiting for a few more pieces before I give this a try with my Equinox.

Thanks! The image was shot through the Equinox using my XSI which has the Baader IR/UV filter installed that replaces the standard IR/UV filter that is installed by Canon. This is usually what people mean by 'modded' and it's because your camera will then capture more red wavelengths of light. I also shot this with a Televue Focal Reducer/Field Flattner. (TRF-2008) Which is a GREAT match for the Equinox! If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Super detail Psyire. I think this duo makes a nice widefield. They are both unique and interesting subjects, and each stands out in the wide in it's own way.

Interesting mod. So was a barlow of any kind used? I see many fantastic shots like yours but no mention on how the magnification came to be on a 500mm scope. Was this just cropping from a high quality camera? The resolution is so impressive. Can't wait to try.

The duo looks great as a wide shot and nice detail too. It is a little red, but M82 look cool!

Looking at his specs on the image, he actually used a .8X reducer with his setup. I don't think anyone uses a barlow except on lunar and planetary. A barlow will double or triple your F ratio, not something you want with faint fuzzies.
