Over the past two evenings I sketched the view of our campus observatory dome and the waxing crescent moon with earthshine. On the first night beginning at sunset I drew the view of the observatory deck and dome from across the campus pond. The moon was already in the trees on this night so I knew I would need to return to capture the moon on the next evening if it was clear. The white dome was brightly illuminated by the parking and tennis court lights. As luck would have it, the sky was beautifully clear the next evening and I was able to finish the drawing as planned.
Sketching:
9"x 12" sheet of dark blue construction paper, a set of Grumbacher oil pastels, x-acto knife for correcting mistakes, flat edge toothpicks for blending, fly tying pocket clip-on lamp.
Conditions: Clear to partly cloudy both nights 29-30°C (84-86°F) Very humid, calm Time: 1:15-2:30 UT 6-24-2009 2:00-2:30 UT 6-25-2009 Location: Palos Hills, Illinois

Rich,
Thank you much. It was nice to be out in the evening without rain. One of these days I'll try pastel chalk, I would guess it is more forgiving than oil pastel.

Frank,
That is a beautiful sketch. What better companion for the dome than the moon, in this frame?
Frank, do you use the observatory for your own observations?

Frank,
A beautiful observation of the Waxing Crescent Moon (with Earthshine) over your campus dome. You have captured the Earthshine very nicely. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Rony,Carlos and Jim,
Thank you guys for the kind words.
Rony,
To answer your question, I don't use the observatory for my own observations because it is 10 miles closer to Chicago. When I have the scope at my house in winter for cleaning and repair I do use it.

great sketch of the campus observatory, much more inviting than it was that cold windy march evening earlier this year.

T5,
Oh yes, it was better in April but our March night was wind chilly. Thanks Tommy5.

Michelle,
Thank you, both nights were those typical warm, humid, lighting bug filled summer nights of youth.

Sorry I missed this post earlier. It's a beautiful composition with that evening feel of twilight color overall
I espeically like your inclusion of the close foreground subject matter. It gives the scene great depth and realism.
You've reminded me that I am overdue for another landscape. Thanks for posting this.
