Hi everyone,
I got myself one of the new Lunt LS35THa solar telescopes recently because I'm going to see the eclipse later this month off the coast of Japan.
Optically I think it's great, especially for the money I paid, compared to the PST. However I cant get my Canon 40D to focus through it.
It has a helical focuser and a reckon it's a bit better focussed towards the most extended end of focussing. As you can imagine I'm fairly desperate to get it to focus before the 15th when I leave. I've tried it with a barlow, but no luck, if anything it's worse.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris. Glad you like your new toy. Have you tried a focal reducer? Mark

Hi Mark,
No, haven't tried a focal reducer, haven't got one yet, I know I need one, but if i get that and it doesn't work I won't be able to afford anything else to get it working before I leave. But I suppose I haven't really got any other options. Any particular one you recommend?

What about afocal photography? It's not as elegant a solution, but it does work - I've taken a few shots with a PST this way. All you would need is an adapter to mate the scope's eyepiece with a camera lens, and you shoot through the eyepiece.
Will this be your first total solar eclipse? If so, many suggest enjoying the awesome, but fleeting spectacle just visually, and saving imaging attempts for future trips.
Best wishes. Hope it works out.

Hi, yes I had considered doing it afocally, but I haven't got a compact camera and there are things I'd rather buy than one of them (e.g. a dsi or something). I've just asked the vendor and apparently you need a type of adapter from Lunt. He's emailed them and they're getting back to me tomorrow.
Thanks for the help anyway.
