The Veil nebula
      #3196522 - 07/03/09 06:56 AM Attachment (96 downloads)

For a long time I wanted to sketch this one, but didn't have a courage. For some reason, beautiful objects like Veil, M42, Andromeda galaxy, Swan nebula - keep scaring me away. (Probably I'm always afraid that I won't achieve the desired result)
Anyway this is a first attempt. Though it was sketched under dark desert skies, I started the sketch at ~4 am. Since it was at june 20th - I really had to hurry.
I learned a few lessons, and next time probably will try the NGC6960's sister - the eastern part of the Veil.
Also I experiment lately with various sketch layouts, to find the most ipressive one

The Telescope I used was Orion's 8" SkyView pro Newtonian, with 25mm eyepiece and Ultrablock filter.
The sketch is made on white paper using HB, 3H and 5H pencils, red led light, and few blenders. Then, as usual, it was scanned, inverted and processed a bit in photoshop.

That's one beautiful sketch Michael!

I have to repeat that. Those objects (and I should add the Pleiades) keep scaring me away too. They are just too complex.

A seeing of 6.5m..... you're really lucky.

Great sketch, Michael. I enjoy seeing everyone's sketches on this site. I hope to post a few of my own as soon as I get some clear skies. Until then I will live vicariously through the eyes of my web friends.

Michael,

Tremendous sketch! I like that you post your actual sketch and then a larger inverted one. Your details look excellent also btw.

This is one of the best drawings I've seen of the Veil nebula . While you look for NGC-6992, look for NGC-6995 as well, it looks something like a witch's broom in shape and lies in between the two brighter sections. The larger the telescope, the more complex this nebula becomes. It's a real challenge to sketch through a large telescope because you see filaments everywhere. Well done!

Michael,

Wow, this is most impressive. The veil is a very beautiful target and you have sketched it the way it really looks. You simply must capture all its parts and post those sketches. Excellent.

Frank

I remember seeing that nebula you mentioned on the same night. It's quite a complex and very dim nebula, therefore tough to sketch properly. One day...

And you are absolutely right about the filaments which can be seen in large scopes (or dark skies). They pose quite a challenge for a sketcher.

Michael,

Thank you for posting one of the finest rendering of the Veil Nebula (Western, NGC 6960) that I have ever seen. It is difficult to render such a faint and tenuos celestial object which requires a very clear and dark site as you enjoy over the Negev Desert. While observing this supernova remnant portions of it appear to disappear and reappear as the seeing varies. Congratulations on a superb observation!

Carlos

Michael,

A beautiful sketch, and a real inspiration for all of us.

I hope that you get the opportunity to sketch the other parts as well.

Michael

Living in an extremely light polluted area, I got my first look at the Veil Nebula when I visited Cherry Springs last fall (between the rain storms). Your sketch is exactly how I remembered it. Very impressive.

Michael,

Excellent rendering of the Western Veil. I like your presentation, too. I share your trepidation about attempting some of these complicated targets--glad you didn't get scared off.

That's a cracker !! I know how difficult this object is .
I have eyeballed it several times in large scopes but not sketched it as yet .

Dee

Thanks again =)

The next challenge is trying OIII filter (instead of UHC) on this one, on a clear winter desert night (when you can see M33 by a naked eye). Or the eastern Veil which is giving me the creeps

Michael,

Your sketch of the Veil is one of the finest I've ever seen of this beautiful object! I very much look forward to your rendition of the eastern portion.

Michael,

THAT my friend is one AWESOME sketch of the Veil. Looks like it didn't scare you too bad because you captured the intricate details of this wispy nebula to a "T".

Excellent!
