Those are great, Colin, but I'm a bit confused by them. Can you explain the appearance of what I believe is the sun's track? And the processing?

Neat that exposures was 6 months long so each track is the sun going across the sky. Very cool that you can see the Sun getting higher in the sky as the days got longer.

Is the bell shape of the tracks caused by distortions of the image at the sides of the field?

Very interesting. The bell shape would be due to the film being flat rather than spherical.

I asked Adam to register and comment on this thread. I notice the cloudes making the sun skip in portions. Bob I am sure you read the original post. It seems to be photographic paper exposed in a pinhole camera not developed but scanned then photoshopped to invert the white to black. I would be interested to hear more from Adam on the subject. He is really good at doing fun science stuff on a almost zero budget. He did some really interesting pulsed holograms on a very low budget. (This would normally require a $40,000 laser!)

The flatness of the film makes the sun tracks look like the Radio City Music Hall marquee, or neon on an art deco cafe.

It is amazing thet he did not overexpose the film. I wonder if the gaps between the solar paths are cloudy days or if he used a shutter?

Hi Colin,
You might be interested in this then. I did something very similar to this a couple of years ago. I waited until the RASNZ astro conf. and distributed the 'cameras' then, since I knew they would be distributed around NZ, spreading the 'risk' and geographic latitude. (see the comments on the individual photos for the lat & long & direction thet the camera was pointing)
It's possible to see that the solar arc's are flatter from cameras located at the higher latitudes (eg Bob Evans in Invercargill) than from cameras located at lower latitudes (eg Deborah's in Dargaville) He won't have used a shutter. Those gaps will show periods of cloudy weather. If you look at the traces from John Burt & John Drummond's cameras in the sunny Hawkes Bay you can see that they showed similar traces as they are both located in Gisborne.
I used what paper I had, - some very old paper of unknown vintage, and a developer that wouldn't have been used for many years, but I wasn't going to get new developer for just this project. I tested it first on the paper from my solar camera. I'd have had to send away to Auckland for developer these days, - it's no longer available locally.
